Last week, during a normal load of laundry our HE3 Washer started making a horrible loud sound! It sounded like a car coming through our garage. We got the washer stopped. When we removed our white clothes, there was a rust color all over them. There is a gaping hole under one of the baffles in the seam of the Stainless Steel tub. I did not buy the extended warranty 3 years ago when we paid $1,000 for this machine. I called Sears, their service guy claims he had never seen this before and handed me an estimate for $1,100 to repair it. I laughed and showed him out!!!! I read in the manual that the Stainless Steel tub has a Limited Lifetime Warranty, so I called Sears to complain. The service guy said nothing about this warranty. When I explained to the woman on the phone what had happened, she looked up my model (Model # 110.42822201) and told me there were two Service Flashes on this model for tub problems. They are sending a different service guy out tomorrow. I am mad that the first service guy did not know the warranty and knew nothing about the Service Flashes. Where can I look these Service Flashes up. I bought my machine in May of 2003. It is an HE3 Should these repairs (Parts & Labor) be covered? The tub is completely blown apart. I am now concerned what other damage was done. Do I have the right to demand that they replace the entire machine, since they sent me NO RECALL Notices, and the damage was done as a result. What about the damage to my entire load of laundry? Where can I go for some of these answers. I have digital pictures of the damage it it helps. Thanks,

Service Bulletins are not recalls, hence no notices would be sent out, they are just information sent to service shops adressing re-occuring problems....also since this is a Whirlpool made washer with the Kemore name on the front is difficult to get any information....I do believe that tub would be under warranty but you will be paying the s/c and labor....I have not seen any reference to this problem in any of the tech forums....reality is you will have to deal with Sears even tho it was made by Whirlpool, and Sears does not release information readily.

When I called for service the first time, they offered a $300 1 yr. warranty. I had heard that front loaders were expensive to fix, so I bought it. The first service guy said the repair parts were $1,100 (the tub and baffle). What do you think the labor will run on this repair. I guess my warranty would cover up to the $500 limit on the warranty? Should I repair or, scrap the washer? Honestly, after the sound it made and the hole that is in the tub, I am leary to ever turn it on again. What do you recommend?

I imagine the labor would be somewhere around $450.00, but is just a guess...I have the WP Duet and love it, is the same as yours, see what it is going to cost you then decide...but there may be more damage that is not covered....might see if Sears would replace the washer, worth a try...

i haven't seen this one. looks like a seam split. i'd argue this one. all damage may have been caused by the split basket. what else did the 1st guy want to replace? labor should only be 250-275 plus the parts. under the agreement you bought the fix is limited to 500. if it's over that 2 choices pay the difference yourself or take 500 towards a new machine. it still seems as though you are going to shelling out an awful lot of money in a 3year period. squeaky wheel usually gets the oil!!!

The Technician's exact comments were " Part Failure: The basket came a part needs front rear tubs baffles pulley basket est. $1,076, customer wants money toward a new machine." At the time, I did not realize that the machine has a Limited Lifetime Warranty on the Stainless Steel Drum. Nor did the repair man fill me in on this. In my anger I got the book out to find an email address to send my pictures to, when I found the warranty listed in the front of the book. I feel this warranty should cover my problem???? It does say that after the first year, I will be charged for the labor. There is so much damage, I am afraid to even get it fixed and use it. I think since the repairs are so extensive $$$, they should replace the machine??? The first guy says that something (a foreign object) probably got caught. He could not find anything when he took the top off the machine.

Were you washing rocks in that thing ? Or you have very bad water where you live. I can see much rust in there. That comes from the water supply. You would need to get a whole house water filtration system or this will happen again. You will most likely need a rear sell/berring with the wash basket. It may take a few tries to get a good rear shell. Many come damaged. But once the basket ...ect is replaced it should be fine. Most front loader machines no matter which make will last an average of 4 - 6 years under normal to heavy use.

The stainless steel basket is covered under warranty, but not the vains or the tub shell... There are two pieces to the tub shell each over 600.00 plus two men and 2 to 3 hour job.... The bill would be around a grand even if the basket was covered.. Did water leak out or was the tub breached?

The second Sears Repair person what here yesterday. The first guy said he'd never seen this before, handed me an est. for $1100, or offered the $500 (under my 1 year warranty that I bought for $300 when I called for service) towards a new machine. At that time I did not realize the S.S. tub had a lifetime warranty. When I read the book and saw the lifetime warranty, I called Sears back and asked sears to send a different tech. That happened yesterday. It was a woman, who also said she had Never seen this before. She made a few phone calls then told me that Sears would pick up the cost of the parts under the warranty: Sub Tub-Outer, Sub-Basket, Sub- Tub Outer - Totaling $714.00 Then she estimated I'd also need Sub Baffle K, and a gasket for $54.22. That money and the $182 Labor would be covered under the Protection Agreement Warranty - 1 year that I already paid for. She did say however that it was going to be a afternoon - 2 man job. They could potentially open the machine, get it apart and find other damage. That is what I am affraid of. I told her that was fine, as long as I would then have an option to reject the est. and still take the $500 towards the new machine. Bottom line, I regret my decsion to buy a front loader! I would never do it again. My husband & I bought the machine in May 2003. We are a family of 4 (a 6 yr. old and 3 year old). I don't think we have very heavy dirt (we send a lot of business clothes to the cleaners) and our kids don't get that dirty. We did not have a water softener, but also did not have any problems with any other appliances. In fact, we still have our original water heater (13 years on a builder grade unit). I would think if the water was what caused this, we'd also be burning throught water heaters??? I think it was faulty S.S. - it broke at the weakest point, the seam. Do you think Sears should also pick up the labor cost $182.00 and the $54.22 for the sub baffle and gasket. I am still paying the $300 for the repair for the cost of the warranty to cover these items? If they find anything else when they take it apart, would I be better to take the $500 towards the new machine, and run? I told the service person that I would really like the machine replaced, she said they would NOT do that, but would give me the parts to fix it? Should I feel o.K. with a repaired machine? Thanks,

Mary B.......It all comes down to one thing......PEACE OF MIND.......even after all of the repairs have been made, and all of your out of pocket expense, are you going to be happy and be trusting of the machine. If I read your post right you will still be out of pocket $182.00 & 54.00 for a total of another 236.22 (gasket and labor). With the 500.00 and that 236.22 you are very well in range to buy a new machine, and not have one that is 3 years old with a bunch of new parts and old ones to boot. Good Luck with your decision.......

Good Luck with your decision....... Just goes to show you when you purchase this kind of unit always take the 5 year service plan. (Master plan Covers everythig or you get a replacement if it can't be fixed) No the 182 and the 52 should be covered by the P.A. 500 special purchased for 300. You now have lost the option of getting a new machine once you argued the point. One source will not allow the replacement no mater how long it takes to repair this unit. Been down that road before. The opertunity has passed. In my experience once the spin basket is replaced you will be fine. That is the whole machine. It will take about two to three hours to replace these parts. You will be good for 3 to 4 more years with your use and water condition. Then the weilds will rust out again from the rusty water.

This sure looks to be a manufacture defect.should also require the replacement of the outer tub due to pressed tub bearing would have been also stressed due to fources applied form the spin basket being out of round.may not show up at first but 6months down the road forsure.total cost est $800 prts and labor[bout 2hrs +/-]...3yrs old and shouldn't hav happened in the 1st place...susgest replace entire unit...besides wouldnt it be good customer relations to ensure future sales or dont they care bout lost sales???
