I have a kitchenaid gas oven/range that will leak gas (smell is noticeable) only when I turn it on.  It has only recently started doing this.  It was sporadic at first, but is now more noticeable.  We are not using the oven now until I get it fixed.

The range burners are fine and not the cause of the problem.  The gas connection to the oven is fine (my gas company checked this for me).  It only occurs when the oven is turned on.

I know it has to be either the ignitor or the valve.  Thank you for the great advice columns on your website for that info.  I have ordered a replacement ignitor from the repairclinic.com site as well.  I have never done any repair like this before and I was wondering if I could get some quick tips on how to go about replacing the ignitor.  I don’t want to destroy something else putting this thing in.

Thanks for responses in advance!

Try this link for a breakdown of the burner components & see if that will help. The part you need is http://www.repairclinic.com/referral.asp?R=154&N=748248

Update:

The new ingnitor arrived about an hour ago.  I took off the back panel of the oven, removed the lower strorage drawer, and took off the oven burner plate.  I saw the old ignitor and then found its 2 wires protruding through the back of the oven.I noted which wire plugged into which receptacle.  Took out the old ignitor and put in the new one.  Put the rest of the oven back together (burner plate, drawer, back panel).  The oven works great...there is no more gas smell when the oven is turned on.

Big thanks to repairclinic.com for the part, and to this forum for the information which lead to the diagnosis of the problem!!!
