Kenmore/Whirlpool DW: Last week we started hearing grinding noises coming from our dishwasher. The manual says it comes from dried food, etc. being ground up and when it passes through the noises will stop-which they did. The cycle continued with no problems. A few days later it happened all over again. Yesterday it started again-loudly and the dishwasher quit. I can hear the hum (of the motor?) but nothing else is happening and there is water in the bottom of the DW. If I open the dishwasher and turn the dial to a different place in the cycle (ie. the beginning), it appears to work fine. So it sounds to me like something big (maybe a plastic spoon?) ended up down there and has jammed the pump or motor? Is this something I can investigate and maybe fix myself? I have never fixed an appliance, but I can follow direction. Last edited on Sun Aug 20th, 2006 12:24 am by rosie girl |

I think a new motor-pump assembly is in your future. You'll need to do some exploratory surgery to verify, this post will help with that: http://fixitnow.com/wp/2006/03/29/whirlpool-kitchenaid-kenmore-dishwasher-poor-cleaning/ Last edited on Wed Nov 29th, 2006 03:04 am by Samurai Appliance Repair Man ____________________ To ask a question, use our new forums==> http://appliantology.org 365-Day No-Hassle Return Policy on all parts purchased through this site, even electrical parts that have been installed! |

Thank you so much for this forum and for your advice! Am I correct in understanding from the picture you referred me to that the motor-pump assembly can only be accessed from beneath the DW? I'll have to empty the standing water, pull it out and tip it over? Is there no way to disassemble it from inside the DW, just to check if there is something caught in there? Someone accidentally started it again today and the grinding started again briefly-so it seems to me that the motor/pump is still working and may just be jammed? Is this a possibility? Last question: if we deem this job to be beyond our meager skills, will it be advisable to buy Sears protection policy ($179) which includes "the service guy coming out, diagnosing the problem and fixing it-parts and labor included-up to $500. If it is over $500, they will give us $500 credit toward a new machine (Sears, of course!). Or would it be more advisable to call an independent repairman who works by the hour?

The entire replacement procedure is done from underneath and inside the dishwasher-- the dishwasher is not removed to do this. More help on replacement here: http://fixitnow.com/wp/2006/04/01/tips-for-installing-a-new-pumpmotor-assembly-on-whirlpool-kitchenaid-kenmore-dishwasher/

Thanks so much!! After reading the link you gave me, I've decided that there is no way I am up to this. I think I will get myself into serious trouble. Any feedback on the Sears agreement vs. calling in an independent repairman?
