I just tried to buy a door liner for my Maytag refrigerator from partselect.com but (a day after the order was confirmed, thank you very much) was told that they don't want to ship a large, fragile part like this from their warehouse in Canada. They could ship from a closer warehouse, but they would have to tack a $70 shipping charge onto it. Yowzer.

I'm wondering if this is a general problem with on-line parts houses, including repairclinic.com. Is it safe to have a part like this shipped, or should I buy it from a local place?

No, this problem is unique because of the international shipping issue.  If there was any additional shipping on this item at RepairClinic (based in Michigan), they would tell you at check out.
