Unbelievable, Just UNBELIEVABLE!

In what appears to be more incompetence and negligence on the part of GE, there has been a massive recall to as many as 6000 "pro-style" gas ranges (yes I said 6 THOUSAND) because of a serious flaw that could lead to an unexpected fire or even an explosion.  The problem stems from worn insulation on the eletrical connectors, which can cause spontaneous sparking to the supply tubes, igniting the gas.  There have been six reports of fires, though thankfully none resulted in injury.(according to GE)

The affected ranges were sold from February 2004 to November 2005 by Home Builders, contractors, and appliance stores for between $4000 to $6000.  The recall involves the following models:

ZDP48N6RH1SS
ZDP48L6RH1SS
ZDP48N4GH1SS
ZDP48L4GH1SS
ZDP48N4GH1SS
ZDP48L6DH1SS
ZDP36N4DH1SS
ZDP36L4DH1SS

The suspect units bear the serial numbers starting with:  DG, FG, GG, HG, LR, MG, RG, SG, TG, VG, AH, DH, FH, GH, HH, LH, MH, RH and SH.

GE Technicians(who have always been rude to me because I wasn't an "authorized" dealer) will repair the problem FREE of charge. (pending yet another class-action lawsuit).  The work will typically involve bundling and relocating wires and the thermostat control AWAY from the gas supply tubes!  Until these repairs are carried out, GE spokewoman Kim Freeman says owners can continue to cook with the following caveats:  owners should NOT use the griddle on the 36 and 48 inch models, nor the LEFT FRONT BURNER on the 48-inch models.  There have also been a few reports of PREMATURE failure of the thermostat control due to heat buildup in the control panel!  Since these are not covered by this recall, and should the thermostat found to be defective, the CUSTOMER shall be responsible for replacing the unit, and all parts and labor involved. (my opinion is that GE should give EVERYONE their money back ASAP).  Owners of the above mentioned range models can call 1-866-696-7583 to arrange for free in-home repair.

So, there you have it folks.  GE has succeeded in building a range that is not only faulty, but capable of blowing you and your house into the the next galaxy.  Once again, GE will probably be facing yet another flurry of lawsuits and many angry customers.  I honestly don't know how they stay in business...  These were PROFESSIONAL style gas ranges that cost thousands of dollars to purchase and install.  If I had an axe for every GE appliance that I've ever worked on, I could fill a landfill...   As for me, I never cared much for gas appliances myself.

GE is no stranger to this sort of thing. At one time we could have built a standing monument higher than the Watts towers using nothing but trashed out  GE rotary compressors.

Yeah, that stems from the other class-action lawsuit launched a few years ago, regarding thousands of fridges with bad compressors which GE knew were faulty.  The courts ordered GE to replace or repair all the affected fridges free of charge.  I recall there were a LOT of upset & angry customers over that one.  Brand new refrigerators that had compressors go bad within 3 months!  Inexcusable and unacceptable.

GE, and their entire line of "Profile" and "Monogram" appliances do NOT impress me in the least.  If I owned an appliance store, I would actually be embarrassed to market and sell this garbage.  I'm surprised they've lasted this long.  And good luck finding parts and support for any GE appliance that's over 5 years old!

Thier still getting hauled into court for the compressor plague hey?  They have been hit with this sort of thing since they came out with those coffee can rotary units back in the mid 80s.
