I'll bet my festered spleen that the dryer is the real culprit here. Do this test: Get some old garments that do not have this damage and wash them in the HE4. When the cycle finishes, inspect the garments. The damage will be difficult to see on wet clothes so this is not conclusive. Then, dry the clothes in a different dryer from the one that's been used in the past and inspect them again.
