Following a suggestion after my other post, I made sure my drum wasn't binding up either direction. I can see the shaft moving up and down in the transmission. The brake shoes probably need replacement but do slow the drum down after spin (never stop it totally).
Here are the symptoms.
Spin out of water in that direction works fine. No pump problems, leaks, etc. belt pulls fine.
Go to agitate with motor in reverse direction. Tub starts to spin but never gets into agitate. Motor has an odor (now that my nose is close to it). 2 seconds or so, the internal thermal overload kicks out on the motor. You can feel some heat present in the windings at this point. The timer was replaced two days ago, all wiring checked, nothing burned or broken. The problem came on immediately on Monday without warning. It was never intermittant.
Questions:
I can't get the agitator to move independent of the drum. Is this normal? No seal damage is evident, so I don't think water ever got down the shaft.
I am also not sure why the drum starts spinning rather than agitating. Is it possible that the mechanism is overloading it by not completing a mechanical changeover? I suppose it would add some load, but even if the transmission was stuck if the drum was turning free you would think the motor would still turn it ok. I have heard of motors burning out in one direction only.
