Hello, I am trying to help a penniless friend repair her 6 year old Sears Kenmore fridge so she doesn't have to replace it. I am pretty sure its the relay.

Hmmmm - - - - - click...= yes. Comp starts for about 5 seconds or so, then clicks off.

Compressor fan = turns fine.

Start/run relay does not rattle, does not smell.

Unfortunately, the owner was out of town when this started so there is no telling how long (potentially several days) this was going on.

These pics may tell the story.

Tried to follow the ohm measurements from other posts but without diagrams I have difficulty following.

On the compressor, there were the 3 pins that the relay slides on to. I got the following measurements between the 3 pins:

12 ohms
8 ohms
5 ohms.

Capacitor tests OK (starts low goes high).

Should I order the relay? Which one?

From the ohms reading on the relay, (51 ohms across the start/run connections), replacing the start relay/overload pak should take care of your problem.

As RegUS says, the compressor ohm readings look fine.

Across the start/run connections on a good PTC relay you should only read about 5-6 ohms when it is cold/room temp.

If you had your meter possibly set on the wrong setting your 51 ohms might actually be 5.1 ohms which if so could point to a locked up compressor.
