Thru. past experience and posts, my igniters are failing. I usually switch oven igniter with broiler igniter, then replace both when the otherone fails. My question is: Why do these igniters go bad? Low quality, poor workmanship or engineering problem with electric circuit. Have had hot surface igniter in furnace for last 15 yrs. and it has never failed. Just curious if anyone has insight. Thanks Doug

Furnace Ignitors are similar to Gas Dryer Ignitors. They are only energized to light the Gas. The (thermal) Flame Detector keeps the Gas Valve open (if still needed). Oven Ignitors are different. They stay ON anytime there is a (call for) Flame. A (thermal) Flame Detector wouldn't work because it would still sense the heat if the Flame went out. There Ignitors are also in the hot Oven anytime the Oven is still hot, even when they are OFF and the Flame is OFF. Such as when the Oven is still ON, but up to temperature. And sometimes Oven Ignitors get "gunked up" because of "exploding" food-stuffs ... And some people still use Oven Self-Cleaning .. “My Rules”: Rule # 1) Don't ever use Self-Clean on any Oven. Rule # 2) If you're thinking about using Self-Clean, see rule # 1. Self-Clean uses nearly 1000F for 3 hours or more. That can wreak havoc on Electronic Controllers and Connections.

Erratic heating is usually a sign of a marginal ignitor that's on its way out. Could measure the current draw to know for sure. Part link for your ignitor==> http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Hot-Surface-Glow-Bar-Igniter/3377?modelNumber=MGR5729ADL
