 I have the exact same problem that bearsloft describes with the vintage Kitchenaid Imperial by Hobart dishwasher (except mines not pink!).  My ancient dishwasher just quit one day.  It still sounds like it's going thru all the cycles, but little or no water.  I tried his method, poured in a pitcher of water, crossed my fingers, and very hopefully turned it on, but no such luck.  The float switch appears to be clean and loose, and I hear a little click when I lift it and set it back down, so I don't think it's that.  Should I assume it's the inlet valve?  Is it very hard to replace?  Can it be replaced anymore?  I'm really bummed, I loved that dishwasher!  I'm just a dumb old girl and I don't know anything about these new fangled gadgets.  Please help me breath life into it again!

 It made a lot of noise, the water drained out, and then it just kept running but no more water.

 Make sure water is getting to the unit (valve under sink got shut off etc) - open lower kickplate and check for power getting to watervalve

Valve is available from RepairClinic - part #3378 if needed

 Stupid question, but how do I do that?  With a meter of some kind?  I'm a total novice who would have just replaced it if I hadn't lost my job nearly a year ago!

 Yes, you'll need a voltmeter, and you may need to do a bit of plumbing - maybe someone you know would be comfortable with this repair

 i think the kds18 used a drain vale instead of reversing the pump. if it does check the drain valve to make sure it isnt stuck in drain mode.

 dump some water in the tank, set the timer to a wash cycle, and see if the water drains out when it should be washing.
