I have a Roper dryer that has started all of a sudden to hum when you try to use it. Today I took the back off and checked to see if anything had gotten in the blower but there was nothing there. When i push the start button the dryer just sets and hums so I took my foot and tapped on one of the blower blades to try and help and it started to run. Once it starts running if you open the door to turn it off and then close it back it starts to hum again without pushing the start button. The timer is working you can hear it ticking away. So could it be the start butoon and or the motor? I checked the belt and it looks fine with no threads showing. The motor and the drum will turn easily by hand so the motor doesn't seem to be locked up. Thanks jnbking Sorry it was long just wanted to tell all I knew.

sounds like a bad Motor (and probably full of lint) remove the Belt and try turning the Motor Shaft by hand. Does it turn easily, smoothly ? click on picture

Yes it turns really easily and smoothly. So does the idler pulley and both drum wheels. The motor does not have a bad build up of lint on it. Thanks jnbking

I just found a little spring that looks like it came off the motor. Dont know what this might be a sign of? Thanks jnbking

It's most likely one of the little springs that keep the centrifugal weights retracted until the motor gets up to a certain speed to switch the start windings out of the circuit. Take a look just behind the area of the switch, (where all the wires attach to the motor), and turn the motor and you should see the weights and one spring. The spring that you found will go on the opposite side of the spring that should still be there and you can use it as a model as to where to attach the loose spring.
