This Magic Chef Gas Oven Model # 31AA-81KW ( BTW, the plate for the model number and serial number was under the easy lift lid, between the burners) has served me well for the last 12 years and has never given me a problem until now. This little gem was included with the house so I know it's a lot older than 12 years. Last night, I thought all was well but she just wouldn't stop heating up until I discovered ( too late) that it was at 550 degrees and climbing after 30 minutes. I didn't really need a thermostat ( although my ancient Pyrex thermometer was hanigng in there through the heat wave) because the cake was burning, the pan it was in was burning and it was REALLY hot in the kitchen. What I have done since this discovery: I did the TEN MINUTE HEAT CHECK----I set the timer for ten minutes, set the oven on 200 degrees and continually watched what was happening, charting the rising temperature. Right on schedule, she was already at 450 degrees after ten minutes. The bright spot in this story is when the unit is turned to off, it actually goes off. Don't let my handle, repairwhiz, throw you off. I have chosen this handle to act in a more positive fashion regarding my ability to repair appliances, etc. that need repairing. I am still working on the refrigerator after six months.

Thanks RegUS I don't have the manual for this. Can you give me any idea where it is located? Also, from the picture, it looks like it feeds directly into the gas line. I am a bit clueless on this. It says the part is out of stock. Any ideas on when it may come in? I have tried to look up the manufacturing date for this little beauty. I haven't been able to find it. It is an outstanding oven and I really don't want to lose her now.

Out of Stock (usually ships within 14 days) it's the Control that the Oven Temperature Knob goes on ... yes, the Gas Line connects to it... It controls the Gas to the Oven Burner ... Oven serial number may help with date code ...

The Serial Number that I read is this: 6X027 468797 I will re-read the serial number when I can lift the top again. The only deviation may be the "0" may be an "O". I have something cooking on top right now and can't get back to it until I can take everything off of the top. I will have to turn off the gas to do this repair. ( I know, I need a little hand holding on this part When I have lifted the top, there is a silver box right behind the oven temperature knob. I imagine that I will have to take off this box to access the part. I do see a rod, attached to the right inside wall of the oven. It has a wire running off of it but that wire leads to the upper back of the oven.

RegUS or anyone else, I disassembled the oven knob and removed the thermostat. It is completely electric with no gas feed at all. It looks like part # 2803 but there are some differences. The part I removed from the oven is marked with the following: Indiana, PA El3LT-31AR CT7-22-42 3.6 A 120 VAC will part number 2803 fill the bill here?

I ordered the part on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 4:36 PM EST via FedEx ground shipping because I could not wait a week or more for USPS. This was simply the next option up---no overnight, nothing. The shipping option said it would be delivered October 23 but I didn't really think that was possible. The part arrived on Saturday, October 23, 2010 in the morning. The part is installed and working perfectly. The replacement part is not exactly the same ( the old part had both electric leads on the right hand side and the new part had one lead on the left and one on the right) but the leads fit, everything fit and the new thermostat is working without a hitch. Thank you to everyone on this forum and to the help I received. Without your help, it would have taken me much longer to repair or I would have just given up.
