Hello everyone, I have a Maytag Model A412 washing machine.  I ran a load of laundry on Sunday afternoon.  I came home from work for lunch on Thursday, and found that the washing machine was running.  The only other person I live with is my wife, who was at work all day Thursday, and we both had not touched the machine since Sunday.  I really don't know why the machine would start running by itself, but my wife is very superstitious, and is worried that there is a ghost washing their ghost clothes.   Can someone please give a plausible, ghost-free explanation for why this ancient machine turned itself on out of the blue?

Thank you!

P.S. This site is awesome :)

if the timer motor contacts in the timer were shorted, it would continue to run all the way around the dial and not stop until someone shut it off...

Yep, timer. When this style timer fails it usually has the symptoms you are seeing.
