I have much to learn, masters, I have a Kenmore 110-92529100 whose agitator has quit agitating. I found general instructions on how to remove the agitator in context of replacing the dogs, but I think I need a little more specific help: the bolt's not coming out. When I pop the agitator cover off, and try to turn the bolt with my socket driver, the bolt turns, but it doesn't come out. It's as if whatever the bolt is threaded to inside the agitator has broken. With the cap off, I can turn the agitator, but the bolt does not turn. If I place a little downward pressure on the agitator while turning it, though, the bolt does turn. The agitator itself is a single piece unit, not a double-piece that I've seen referred to. There is a small hole at the base of the agitator, and I thought perhaps it was used to stick a screwdriver in to brace the agitator while removing the bolt. Is there still reason to believe my problem is bad dogs? Is there a particular trick to removing this kind of agitator? Regards, Brian Smith

can you take a picture of your agitator and post it here? if its a single agitator with no auger, then you do not have dogs... please use this service to post your picture here: http://imageshack.us/

Yes: the motor runs through the cycle. With the cap off the agitator, I see the bolt rotate relatively vigorously (compared to the agitator). It's as if something is stripped inside the agitator, but I don't know how to get the thing off. Brian

Ok, here's where I'm at in my journey to appliancenlightment. I figured I'd use the motor's strength: with the cap off, when the agitation mode kicked in I had the socket driver at the ready, and this seemed to provide enough torque to get the bolt off. The agitator looks like #4 in the diagram. It fits over a knurled post (into which the bolt went). What I'm wondering is whether there is no longer enough friction between the post and the agitator. Does this mean I need a new agitator? Or can I do something to increase the resistance between the agitator and the post?

I have never seen one of these agitators strip out...usually with this style agitator and your complaint the transmission is bad. usually the agitator will work without any clothes, but when you add the weight of clothing the tranny gears slip under the pressure. The agitator splines mate with the transmission shaft spines...unless the mating splines in the agitator are no longer there then the tranny is bad.

Thanks; the splines in the agitator are all but worn smooth. I'm going to see if I can find one in town to see what a good one is supposed to look like. (I live near Greenville SC BTW)

I've never seen a direct drive Whirlpool built washer strip out the agitator splines like it sure sounds like has happened to Brain's washer. So what do you think? New agitator? New tranny? or new Washer? I appreciate everybody's advice. Regards, Brian

first for me but you need an agitator... the grooves are compeletly worn off... very odd... usually the transmission would give wayyy before that agitator but indeed were correct kind sir. http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Wash-Plate/670575 i double checked to make sure its the agitator... idk why they called it a wash plate lol. i used the whirlpool part number from the sears website just to double check the cross reference... its a good number... sears has it a bit cheaper but no return policy...

I would suspect that by this style agitator stripping out you must wash a lot of blankets or are washing too many clothes per load....may want to back off on the quantity of items a little.

Everybody, thanks so much for your help. I think we're back to good. I'm certain we've given the washer a lot to do over the years; my oldest child, now 21, was probably 5 or so when we got it, and it's done laundry for a family of 5 for a good long time. Hopefully, the $60 part will keep it running for a good while to come.
