AFter my machine began it's battle of dirt in 1993, it finally could battle no more and committed Seppuku. Now it is time to choose the next Iron Samurai Washer. And you will need to help me choose the best samurai washer in the land. We will be able to pay about $800 for the new mighty warrior. A warrior it must be strong large and hardy. It must be able to defend our noble family of 11. Many of which are of the dreaded teenager class, football, dress clothes etc... There is only one more maiden than masters in the house. I trust your wise counsel to help our family in our moment of need. For at the moment we are without a fearless defender and we are urgently needing protection. The attack is mounting please help us find our defender... Christal

wooooweeee, 11? my hats off to ya. Now lets get down to it. Unfortunately you wont find a machine to last that long anymore without several repairs. What type washer were you thinking about, top loader, front loader?

I am not saying it did not require some major surgeries to maintain it's fighting form... But alas now the cost of repair is more than the cost of a new machine... (I did almost all of the repairs myself with the help of the wonderful samurai website..) I would prefer to stay with a front loader. They seem to get the clothes a bit dryer than the top loaders.. Plus my less than five foot self does not have to listen to the very dishonorable teenagers snickering behind my back when I am leaning into a top loader and my feet are no longer on the ground.. The one we had was a 3.1 cubic foot front loader... So do the 4.0 + cubic foot machines really hold that much more and what brand holds up well.. Considering I think we do several years damage in a year with as much as it runs... LOL if the really best machine is a little bit more than the 800.00 we could swing it.. I would rather get something that will hold up for a couple of years than go cheap...

That's a LOT of laundry for a 3.1 cu. ft drum (22 to 26 loads per week?). If you have a WOOD FLOOR laundry room--Samsung front load washers offer very smooth spin cycle performance (no shakes / vibration etc). On CONCRETE FLOORS--- LG front loaders are another good choice. Both brands offer tub / drum sizes *much* larger than 3.1 cu ft. Larger tubs get more laundry done---faster. If service in your area is a concern---checking the websites for service availability can done (zip code search). Use only "HE" type detergent. Three concentrations are commonly sold (regardless of brand): HE : (2) Tablespoons Per Load/Wash HE 2X : (1) Tablespoon HE 3X : (1) Teaspoon Using the *correct* amount of "HE" detergent will prevent / reduce: 1. Musty Odor 2. Cycle Run Time Taking Longer Than Time Displayed 3. Suds Error / Interrupted Cycle 4. Poor Wash Results (especially whites) 5. Intermittent Water Leaks In addition: You'll save on detergent. Your family washes a *minimum* of 22 loads per week (1144 loads/year). Using HE 2X detergent in the 177 fluid ounce jug (one of the most popular & commonly available) you'll likely need to purchase between 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 bottles per year rather than one-jug-per-month. ***************** Perform a *TUB CLEAN CYCLE* every 4 months using: "Tide Washing Machine Cleaner" Last edited on Fri Sep 24th, 2010 01:03 pm by john63 |

Good info, John! Growinup, here's some other tips on performing the occasional destinkification ritual on a front loader: http://fixitnow.com/wp/2008/09/27/de-stinkifying-your-front-loading-washing-machine/

So is the general consensus that the Samsung is the most reliable? Yes we do a LOTS AND LOTS of laundry in this house... So my main thing is wanting something that will not break down within the first 2 years... What would be the advise on loading the machine. I have been told you can fill the drum up lightly packed, then the repair man that we finally had come out to pronounce the machine as dead, said that we should have never filled the drum up past about half to two thirds full. So let me know what you think. I will hopefully be buying a new machine later this afternoon.. growinupinfl

mark mac wrote: LG GOT A NEW 4.0 TOP LOADER OUT WHICH IS NOT A BAD MACHINE, WATER EFFICENT, LOOKS LIKE A CABRIO This is a 5.2 cu ft washer. I have found that top loading agitatorless washers cannot clean as well as front loaders. The tumble action of a front loader does a better job of forcing water & detergent through fabrics---to lift dirt / stains.

So let me know what you think. I will hopefully be buying a new machine later this afternoon.. Reliability with that much laundry is a challenge without going to *commercial* laundry equipment. Your family does the equivalent of 3 years worth of laundry in a single year. For top loading washers---Speed Queen (http://www.speedqueen.com) offers a durable / rugged design. Tub size is limited to 3.3 cu ft---not much better than the old washer. I don't recommend Speed Queen front loaders---we've had too many issues with shaking during the spin cycle even on concrete floor. This washer is also offered only with a 3.3 cu ft tub. Front load washers can be loaded with laundry---all the way to the "12 o'clock" position of the drum. When laundry becomes soaked with water---this load size will drop to approximately 2/3 of the drum. Problems will occur if laundry is "compressed" or pushed---to make additional room to squeeze in more clothing. The *only* exception to this would be all-in-one combo washer / dryers. Since the combo washer / dryer----washes AND dries laundry in the same tub---it is recommended that laundry be loaded 1/2 to 2/3 to allow better and somewhat faster dry time (in the dry cycle).
