This is the first time I have posted, so forgive me if I am asking a question that has been asked before.

I have a Maytag electric dryer (purchased new in 1998) that is squeaking/grinding when running. The model no. is MDE9606AYW. The squeak is steady (actually, it's a bit noiser when the dryer first starts).

I have looked at the FAQ and suspect that it is the drum roller(s). I have not yet opened up the machine.

How do I narrow down the problem to the rollers if it is? If so, how many rollers are there so I can order enough parts? Any other tips/suggestions?

Note that a repair person who is scheduled to come next week (if I don't fix it myself) told me over the phone that it could cost about $175 total to "replace the bearings" (I am guessing he meant the rollers). Is that reasonable?

Lastly, I could not find any information about Maytag repair manuals on this site. Is it true that Maytag jealously guards them and requires you to give up your first born for them?

Could be drum rollers but suspect the blower wheel in the front of the left side of the dryer first. I will see if I can get a breakdown for you......we have replaced blower wheels, drum rollers and idler assys for this type of noise. YOu will want to take the dryer apart and get a visual on all of the possible areas to see what is the problem.

Pegi, do you have a part# to order to get the Maytag rollers as a kit, (pair), instead of individually. I've only seen Maytag rollers as singles, never in a kit like the Whirlpool rollers come in.

Same here Mac, that's why I was asking Pegi. Those Maytag singles are pretty expensive and thought maybe a better deal in pairs if Pegi has a part#.

hello new to the forum i have the same problem ive replaced the two drum rollers and the idler pulley i still have the same rumble checked the blower and it seems fine any ideas ????

Well, it's fixed (at least appears to be). The repair guy came out yesterday and just oiled the drum rollers and the idler assembly. I watched him do it all. I also got in there with an air compressor hose and blew out a whole bunch of stuff (and made a heck of a mess). Cost: $88 and took less than an hour.

I would be much more willing to take on future repairs myself if I could get a Maytag manual. Anyone know where they are sold?

Thanks for getting back to this question Pegi.

Only problem, have you ever tried to use the LA-1008 kit in the "Real Maytag" dryer that was originally being discussed in this thread????

The LA-1008 kit is for the (Admiral, Crosley, Norge, Magic Chef) style of dryer --- Maytag in name only....

The rollers may in fact be the same shaft size and same diameter but the one for the real Maytag is a wide flat roller that runs on the flat surface of the drum. The LA-1008 rollers are the skinny rounded rollers that run in the rear drum groove.

The shafts from the kit deffinitely would not work because the real Maytag has the shafts that bolt directly thru the rear bulk head with stud being part of the shaft. The shafts in the LA-1008 kit have the mounting flange that uses two 5/16" screws to mount to the rear bulkhead.

No, all of the dryers we have replaced the rear drum rollers used this kit, have not seen any dryers with what you are describing.

My Maytag LDE882 dryer makes a rumbling noise and the problem was blower wheel (which is did not find out until replacing the belt and getting the same noise

). The nylon blower wheel was spinning on the motor shaft due to the D shaped shaft cutting an off-center circle in the nylon. You can diagnose if the noise is from the blower wheel by moving the drum and noting a noise that is not in synchronism with the drum movement. I fixed the noise with two turns of MAGIC Tape around the motor shaft!

But I will order the part to keep RepairClinic in business.

I have a similar problem, but with a Model #LDE4914ACE. At first, it would stop its infernal squeaking after a while, but now it won't stop making that noise until I open the front door.
:yikes:

I definitely need to have it fixed, but will no doubt have to do-it-myself with limited funds. I have a well-meaning friend who is willing to either work on it himself or will drag in a friend who will probably ask me to pay him. Unfortunately, the same well-meaning friend has had his "friends" mess up my car, so I would really like to handle the job myself since I feel more confident about my own abilities.

Is there any difference in the way to open up a Maytag Dependable Care Heavy Duty dryer as has already been shown before?

Well, instead of trying to fix the dryer-in-question, he made arrangements to sell me an already serviced Whirlpool electric dryer in exchange for the old, broken Maytag dryer and $20 cash.

So, don't worry about it.
