On the Labor Day weekend, my 12 year old refrigerator decided to stop working. No cooling in refer or freezer. I checked the coils in the freezer and there was NO ICE. There was no dust build up on the condenser coils and the fan was blowing room temp air out from under the fridge. I noticed that a motor was cycling on for a few seconds and then shut down. This would happen every 15 minutes, or so. I pulled the fridge out and the compressor was warm and was being cycled on every 15 minutes. It would start running and then shut down after a few seconds. On the Sat night before I noticed no cooling, there was a burning plastic smell in the kitchen, which I contributed to a hot laptop. But now I'm wondering whether a plastic part failed on the fridge?!? Any ideas?

The plastic burning smell is the compressor relay. Unplug the frige and remove the relay, it has 2 wires going to it. That's a common failure on your unit. Hopefully the compressor terminals are still in good shape. There's still a chance that the compressor could be bad, but you will need to replace the relay to find out. I can't link you directly to the part you need at the moment but if you go to Repairclinic.com and enter your model # and click on compressor parts it will take you to the relay that you need.

Ordered the new relay, replaced it in the refer, and, once again, it works like a champ. How do you do that?? Contribution to follow...
