I can stop the tub during the spin cycle but there is never a time that I can turn the tub, in either direction. The second I open the lid the break kicks in and the tub won't budge.

It sounds just fine when it spins. And yes the spring is in place on the motor.

The inner tub is now spinning during the spin cycle with no clothes in it.

Bingo ! Thats what I needed

unfortunately you have a bad transmission :( the agitator shouldn't rotate back and forth while the tub is spinning.

I have heard that transmissions have a ten year warranty. Do you how I can tell if it is still under a warranty? And does that warranty still count if I didn't buy the machine but got it when I bought the house?

Thank you so much for all your help!!! It is great to know that there are places to go to get information like this you can trust.

The transmission has a 5 year warranty that should be good until 12/31/2010. It would only cover parts and you would be responsible for service call and labor charges. Even with the part covered you may wind up with $300 in the repair. Unless you can get them to send you the parts and you do the work your self.

Not a problem, let us know how it ends up or if you decide to do the work yourself.

Well, I talked to customer service and they would only honor a 1 year warranty. We ended up finding a fairly new whirlpool for less than the price of the transmission. So we just bought that instead of trying to replace the transmission.
