I have recently converted a new Whirlpool gas dryer to propane at our vacation home in Costa Rica, about a month ago. It worked fine for a few days. Then we left, removing the gas tank from the line. Now we returned and the gas burner will not come on. What has changed? I suspected air in the line, so I re-started the dryer a bunch of times with no luck. I loosened the connection at the back to blead air with no results. I hooked up a full propane cylinder in case old one did not have enough pressure. We have a gas flow through water heater on the same line which works fine. One thing, perhaps not effecting this I have to admit to is that the conversion kit did not have the blocking pin described in the package and so I unscrewed the part where the blocking pin was supposed to go and blocked the opening in the existing pin. Can you suggest some steps to take to solve this. I am in a very rural location with a very limited availability of everything.

Might need to bleed the gas line. The way I do it is to loosen the gas connection nut at the dryer and let it his until I smell rotten eggs. Not telling you to do it that way, just sayin'...

You might have a point, it is a very humid climate here. We did not cover the gas line. The water heater works fine. I quess I would have to dimantle the dryer to get to it and how would I know if the valve is oxydated inside? Can I turn the gas burner on manually withou igniting it?

Yea, tell us more about how you didn't have the correct blocking pin and blocked the opening in the existing pin???? Maybe this is why some places won't sale conversion parts??? Do you understand what the blocking pin is for?? Doesn't sound like it to me, if the blocking you did was to put something in the top of the cap where the vent hole is than your regulator isn't blocked open for the 12" W.C. gas pressure of L.P. gas, it is at the 3.5" W.C. pressure for natural gas and probably closing off and not letting enough gas through. Maybe you just got lucky it worked for the few times it did?

Thanks for your reply. Of course I don't know what blocking pin does. I unscrewed the exisitng part in that openning and since the missing part is called "blocking pin" I blocked the small openning in that part and put it back in. Or there something I can do with my limited resources here or do I definitely need the "blocking pin"

The pin holds the regulator open so that it doesn't regulate the LP gas pressure down to 3.5" W.C(Water Column) pressure. LP gas needs to be at 10" W.C. pressure to burn correctly. There's a possibility that blocking the vent hole has restricted the movement of the pressure diaphragm in the regulator and it completely blocked off gas flow. Need to correct the obvious problem first and see if that fixes it. Here's the correct conversion kit for your dryer - Whirlpool part# 49572 http://www.repairclinic.com/referral.asp?R=154&N=1189  Here's a link to the instruction sheet that comes with this kit http://www.servicematters.com/docs/part_instruct/694571.pdf You can order just the blocking pin but someone would have to find you a part# for one, (part# isn't listed on instruction sheet and I don't have a part# handy). There's a good chance just the blocking pin alone is going to cost almost the same price as the complete correct conversion kit cost, also the conversion kit comes with all the required labels that lets anyone who works on this dryer in the future know that it has been converted to LP gas.

Thank you very much for your help. Will order the blocking pin and install it properly on my next visit. Clothes line will have to do for now, but nothing dries here in the humidity. Is there a need for bleeding the line when changing the tanks?

I would like to thank you again. I sifted through all boxes in the garage, found the blocking pin in a box with misc. parts which must have fallen out of the plastic bag it came in(they should pack similar items in boxes or sturdier plastic). I installed the pin and the dryer works fine since then. You helped me solve a big problem and it is great to see that we still have knowledgable people and that they volunteer to share their knowledge.
