I went to unload the dishwasher and found it was still full of water. I unhooked the drain hose and put it in a bucket, and it drained very slowly. So, I removed the hose and checked for clogs, but it was clear. When I hooked it back up, it sounded like uncooked rice grinding around underneath the machine. I checked the grinder, and found lots of junk in there. Cleaned it all out and put it back together. But, it still has the rice grinding sound underneath, and it still isn't draining. I've never done this kind of repair work before, so I really don't know what to look at next. I appreciate any info you can give me.

Probably going to have to take the drain pump out and dismantle it. To get to it you will have to pull the machine out. It's item # 60 on the diagram below.

I will give that a try. Is there anything in particular that I should look for?

Paper, chicken bones, marbles, tea bags, sea shells, cigarette butts, etc. May sound crazy, but these are all items I've found in dishwasher drain sumps and pumps.

Drain pump is out and dismantled. However, there was nothing inside. Anything else I should take apart while I have it out of the cabinet? Thanks for talking me through all this, oh wise ones!

Gonna have to look into the wash pump all the way down from inside the unit

Ok, I couldn't see much, so I pulled out the sump housing, and looked inside at the motor and pump. There were several pieces of hard water and detergent buildup in and around there, so I pulled the motor out of the housing and cleaned the pieces out. Nothing looked big enough to block the water flow. Can I assume correctly that this means either the motor or the drain pump needs to be replaced? If so, is there a way for me to test and find out which one may be causing the problem?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have been trying to work on this after getting the kids off to school and the husband off to work, so please excuse the lack of understanding. We are talking about #60 on the diagram appl.tech.29501 has above, correct?
