While I'm not certain that your model is similar to mine, I did have a similar problem with my GE r/f. There is a solenoid that helps push the flapper closed and mine quit working. Anyway, if your unit has the touch panel display above the opening in the freezer door, you might try prying the touch panel off from the bottom and you'll see four screws, one at each corner. If you remover those screws, you can access the solonoid and either check its wiring or install a replacement. Again, when I Googled your model I got a washing machine so I'm not at all certain what you have is what I had. Good luck. |

Thanxs for the reply, yes it seems I would say we have a similiar model mine came apart like that also.I see the sylenoid it seems to be working just not all the time seems for some reason the door doesnt open all the way and it makes ice get caught in the chute. Is the door suppose to open all the way or just about an inch?If I use my finger i can open it all the way seems there is nothing keeping it from open all the way.If that is the reason the ice is sticking in the chute then would it be the sylenoid?Thanxs in advance jim |

Hello, my sorry friend. Yes, I have wrestled with several of these refrigerators from the GE, the Great Satan. I seem to recall the door itself and the spring were common problems. Perhaps this diagram of the dispenser internal organs will guide you in your investigation. |

Jim, my flapper opens at least a couple inches, so there may be another sinister force working in your GE r/f. For what it's worth, some of my problems have been that the connectors get wet and corrode, then don't make adequate contact. You might try pulling the connectors off the lugs and cleaning them with a small file, emery board, sandpaper, or even a pencil eraser. If that doesn't work, I fear a new solendoid is in your future. Good luck. Greg |

Well guys GE acts like they havent got a clue what Im talking about and says they will have to charge a service call.So i guess Ill repair it myself what parts would you start out with and work your way down? When you say the door is not thick enough you are talking about the litlle flapper door for the ice dispenser correct? If I order a new one will it be the same or have they changed it to a thicker door?Should I start there or the cylenoid? |

The whole door is not thick enough, not enough insulation, the doors of the frig need to be replaced....or the whole box....call them back till you get ahold of the right person... |

Im trying them back again,But I get the feeling they are gonna say no way so my only other option is a whole new door? That is kinda expensive there is nothing else I can do to fix this? |

I called them they said I will have to pay a service tech $50.00 to comae out and look at it.I know the freezer door is frozen cause it crunches when you squeeze it,And you can see ice crystals on the panel. The people at ge said it was up to the tech if he says it is a factory defect they will fix it at no charge but if not I have to pay the 50.00 service call. What are my odds on the tech saying it is defective?slim to none?It is a certified ge tech.Should I just say forget it and save the 50 bucks cause I cant see paying a whole lot to fix it. |

These frigs are under a 4 year moisture porgram to be repaired at no charge if the model and serial numbers fall within the defective units....what is your complete model and serial number. If the frig is not over 4 years old and is within this program it will be worth a $50.00 gamble to have two brand new doors at no cost to you as long as the tech hears and feels the ice crunch in there so do not mess with it until you see what G.E. will do or you will foul up the evidence.... Read this.......will add the update in a few also... Important Change to 4th Year Moisture Program On any service call for any failure on the listed models/serial numbers, please call customer relations once the diagnosis is complete at 1-800-437-9283, prompt 1. The serial number range on the affected models has been expanded to include all serial numbers from AA2-ZD2. Last edited on Thu Sep 8th, 2005 03:12 am by Pegi |

You are welcome, they do not want you to know, that letter was to the authorized service shops out there, I would not known either if I had not come across that in a place servicers only have access to as I do not do G.E. authorized service. No wonder Florida has a class action lawsuit going on about this and I would hope it would spread to the rest of the world.... |

The force says it couldn't hurt to be sure that ice chute is nice and frosty when the GE tech arrives. How? don't force the little ice chute door closed, instead allow it to stick open a day or few before he gets there. After he does the right thing and orders your doors at no charge why not buy the guys lunch that day and slip him a tip. |

I will do one better and fix a steak dinner for him and I had already planned on leaving the door open thanxs for the suggestion.I dont know if it will hold out till the 18th though just had to use a blow dryer to defrost the fan in the freezer it just started making alot of racket and from prior experience I knew the fan was freezing.I will definetly recommed this site to anyone with appliance trouble, yall have been nothing but courteous and helpfull.I just want to let you klnow your knowledge is a life saver to us. |

Hey one more thing I noticed while clearing out the shelf to blow dry the fan.The shelf right below the ice maker is now very uneven it is like one side is about 3/4 of an inch lower than the other but it is on the pegs properly. Is that normal? |

Push the little flap door closed until a few days before your service call. The fan noise is something I've run into many times. Believe it or not, it's just a phase it's going through and the noise will stop for months or years then come back for a little while. I believe it has something to do with the adaptive defrost and/or having the evaporator fan running during the defrost.cycle. Frost or ice are allowed to accumulate on the fan blade or shroud and it makes that horrible fan noise for a while. Glad to share the knowledge with almost anyone who appreciates it. Be sure and do your part and keep us posted on everything that happens with GE so we'll know what to tell our customers who have this problem. Take notes as you go cause there will be a test... Some people get a fight from GE. Some have no problem at all. Some have stories that are almost comical. May the force be with you. Last edited on Fri Sep 9th, 2005 02:26 am by Jedi Appliance Guy |

Hey.. one more thing. Be carefull with that hair dryer. It can melt and warp plastic. Pull the shelf above the ice bin. Pull the ice bin. Empty the ice bin. Put them back in properly. Make sure your freezer door closes properly when you are done. |

Well guys bad news ge tech called said it would be $150.00 plus tax he didnt even have to look at the unit and wouldnt be out til the parts come in.Did not even come out and look at it!That is a crock!Oh well what should I do they say that is discounted and that is all they will do.They claim they are giving me the parts just charging me labor to install does that sound fair? |

Probably, they go by the repair history, you will be getting about $1,000.00 worth of doors for free....you need to decide if you want to accept their offer or replace the frig..... |

Well is the fridge worth that or should I jut buy another one he claims he is just taking the doors apart and putting a new heater in the door he didnt say anything about replacing ghe doors he said he was gonna order the parts for it and have them shipped here. But like I said he claims he isnt replacing the doors just the heater in the doors.Should I tell them to replace the whole doors? If I do that will they do it cause they told me on the custtomer cars line that since my fridge was right at 4 years old that I should just be happy with what they are doing they didnt have to do anything.By the way it will definetly be the last ge appliance I ever buy. |

If they are just going to replace the heater in the door and not replace the whole doors I would not go there, especially with charging you $150.00. Tell them you demand the doors be replaced, the problem will still be there with the junk repair they are saying they are going to do, the freezer door is already damaged all inside...I would not pay to have that done.....my opinion... |

I agree, new doors or nothing. The $150.00 kit might work. I wouldn't pay one dime for the kit either. |

Well it looks like a no go on the doors,I just talked to ge again they said it is 150 dollars or I wont get anything done. They did say that even though my fridge is right at the 4 years mark if I had problems with it later on down the road they would fix it again at no charge.I complain about the food I have thrown out in the past they gave me another # and said to call it and file a claim I will have to wait til tommorrow cause they are closed now. They also said that I do need to make the tech guy call them when he comes out cause he shoould have come to the house before he ever ordered the kit. They said sometimes they replace the whole doors but in my region (Nashville,tn) most of the time they just use the kit they have cause humidity here isnt bad year round. But if the doors have rust in them when he comes out they need to be replaced she said.Does any one have a take on all this?I am at my wits end and dont see them douing anymore.I hasve talked to 3 diffrent people at there hotline and they finally tell me that that is all they will do no more negotiating or anything.I guess what im asking is it worth the 150. or no and also what will they do if they come out and fix it and i refuse to pay?I havent gave them anything yet and im sure the tech wont ask till he is done. |

I always have my COD customers sign my "authorization to perform work " before I ever touch a tool or even look at the machine. If they won't sign I get back in my air conditioned Sprinter go help other Paying customers. The service manager will back me up every time on this. Not paying after work is performed is probably not a good idea. My take..... Your tech is in trouble with his boss now. Down here I've heard the guy didn't show up either but called instead. Of course he was ordering new doors at no cost and not pissing people off by charging them $150.00 for a kit that works a percentage of the time. The rust and humidity stuff make sense. We always have humidity down here in the tropics and I have seen the kits fail a year or two after they were installed. I have no other suggestions on how to deal with GE but please keep us posted. |

Well i will.Thanxs for the reply. The tech is a ge tech from there service center.I called alot of others and they said ge usually didnt authorize to many if they have a service center close and one is the next county over.I dont want to come off wrong I wouldnt want to cheat the tech out of his money,But I figure if he is out of there service center then he would be paid.I did think it was kinda of wierd though the tech said he would order the parts and have them sent here to our house and then to call and reschedule the service after the part arrives.I will say if i squeeze the doors i can hear ice crunching. So if there is that much moisture in there that there has to be rust also.I also sent my name in to the class action lawsuit being filed but I believeit is on ly for Florida so guess Im out of luck there to.Oh well looks like my only optoin is to roll the dice and pay the 150.00.Thanxs everyone for your help but guess Im pinned in here.G.E has definelty lost another customer here in tn. |

GE still amazes me.I called to reschedule the appointment, I told the rep I needed a Sat. appointment like the last one I had snd he informed me that they didnt do Sat appointments.I told him I just had one for last Sat and what had happened and he said sorry we dont do Sat appointments in your area. What in the world are they doing there?Anyways tech is suppose to call this Mon between 1 and 5 and I will have to tell him I cant be there til 4:30.I know that one is gonna go over well!!!I will be the first (probably not) to say GE service is about the worst on the market. |

Hey again, Well the tech guy came to my house today. He wasnt the lame one that never came out just called in the parts,He actually looked at the freezer and said right away I had to have new doors on fridge and freezer so he ordered them.Of course it might have helped that I posted the memo that I picked up from here that went to the service tech's on the freezer for him to see.Anyways getting new doors out of the deal still had to pay $164.00 but atleast it isnt a patch.Tech guy said no matter what they made everyone pay the money said it was alot cheaper than actual cost though said that amount wouldnt even cover the tech visit and the labor so I shouldnt complain. But of course I did anyways. But just wanted to say thanxs to all, the tech did say it would do no good to file a claim on the ruined food cause he was 99 percent sure they wouldnt cover it I could try if I liked though.Anyways thanxs again and hopefully this will be the last of my problems with the unit. |

Cool, you are getting the doors!!! Better than $150.00 for the heater kit. Glad this worked out for you. |
