Bought a used Whirlpool side by side with an ice maker in the freezer (water and ice in the door).  It is about 8 years old and is a component ice maker.

It appears to cycle fine but does not make any cubes.  When I jumper V and L it gets water.  After doing this it will make one cycle of cubes, but never fills with water again.  Also, water also comes out of the door when the water lever is pushed (fyi).

Model # ED5GTFXKQ02

Any help would be great!

Are the optics working properly? Open door should be flash flash pause, flash flash pause. When you close the flapper it should be steady on.

Also, what is the freezer temp.? has to be 15 F or colder for the ice maker to work.

appl-tech - no optics on my model that I am aware of.

RegUS - any chance of cleaning those contacts?  If not, for the price difference I presume replacing the whol eunit is the best bet.

RegUS, I took off the module and all of the contacts looked pristine.  I took a small screwdriver and closed the gaps a little where the 5 or 6 pins meshed into the back of the module.

After reassembling it and plugging it back in I let it cool off for an hour.  When I checked a few minutes ago it had cold water in the mold assembly!  I sure hope this is the start of something good!  Thank you very much for your help!

This is a great site and I will be sure to point people in this direction.

Update!

The ice maker made 3 or 4 cycles of ice and then the water stopped flowing.  This is exactly what happened when I first brought it home.  I can still activate the water by jumpering V and L.  But it does not get water during the cycle once everything has been running for a few hours.

Any more ideas I before I break down and replace the entire ice maker?

Did we ever get an accurate freezer temp?

Freezer temp is around zero.  But that is only as low as my thermometer will go.

Update!!  I bought a new control module for $30.  Unplugged it, replaced it, plugged it in.  Made ice again for 2 or 3 hours.

I noticed (looking more closely than last time) that the refill level of water is less and less each cycle.  This continues until not enough water for ice cubes.  I can still fill it completely with water if I use a jumper wire.

So what is going on here?

Initiate a fill via the T and H test ports. Get a helper to read voltage at the inlet valve coil for the icemaker without unplugging the wire connector (coil over the smaller 1/4" tube). When the unit calls for water (tines in 11 O'clocl position) have your helper count when he sees the voltage resgister on the meter. They should see voltage for 7 seconds watch the water flow into the mold as they are doing this. If you hav voltage for 7 seconds and the mold barely has water then the inlet valve is bad. If you don't have voltage then the module is bad.

OK, during the cycle it sends about 4.9 volts (or thats what my meter said) to the coil for 7 seconds.  But no water enters the ice mold.  Does this mean that the inlet valve is bad?  If so, why does it still fill with water when I jumper V and L?

that's more like it. If your getting  "good" water flow when you jump L and V but not when you jump the modules T and H then the module has a problem

not making much sense though, if you had 90V you should have gotten water in the mold. I'd try your test again and see if you get the same results
