My washer makes squealing noises on large loads, then today it stopped spinning all together.  I got underneath it and had my wife watch the agitator and drum while i spun the large white pulley underneath.  When i spun the pulley counterclockwise both the agitator and drum spun, when i spun the pulley clockwise the agitator spun.  I did notice a smell coming from the washer, almost like it was electrical.

Any ideas?

Steve

yes the pump pulley turns freely, although it does sound like it rubs a little.  i took it off and looked at it and cleaned it real well but still sounds like it is rubbing, just barely though.

rubbing internally or externally? look between the pump base plate and the pump pulley. do you see a shiny piece of wavy metal in there? if so pump is shot. will the motor on the machine now run with the belt off?

I do see metal between the pulley and the base plate.   Can i turn the machine on without the pump on it?  I am asking if i should try that?

So do you think this is also what is causing it not to spin?  A bad pump?

if you see the shiny metal the pump is binding. the friction is causing the squeeling as well as additional drag on the motor in turn tripping on the thermal over load. the pump is probably all you need.
