In the picture the defrost thermostat is located right behind that red connector. It has a light blue and a dark blue wire coming out of it.

The control i was referring to is the temperature display where you adjust the temperature.

ok, it has now. the compressor started and is running. the fan for the coils in the back of the fridge is running and clean. the fan inside the freezer is also running smoothly. the fridge sounds fine too.

The defrost thermostat is the small black disk. It is wired in with the heater element. It shuts down the heater element when the temp reaches a point in which the frost melts. usually 50f. Ice does not get a chance to build. With a failed system the frost is allowed to accumulate into ice and you has a problema. Do not bang on my evaporator!!! you want to bust a hole in it and let the freon all out? That will defrost it. LOL

ok, it does NOT sound totally fine....
there's some funky noise coming from the freezer....on and off.....can't really describe it......sounds like a guy on the toilet when he's constipated.....sounds like water trying to get through....or something......just on and off......coming directly from the metal sheets/the components.
keep in mind that the thing was defrosting for about an hour (unplugged)

no. i remember removing some of the ice (as much as i could) before i turned it on. there's no ice that's accumulated on the therm.
i'm going out for about an hour.
should i keep it running or unplug so it can defrost completely?

buy a cheap volt ohm meter at walmart or somewhere while your out...can get a cheap one from for less that $10

I'll bet one of the connectors to the heater got some water in it and froze enough to stop power from flowing through the heater at defrost time. Unplug the unit, cut out both connectors and hard wire them using either wire nuts or butt connectors. A steamer gun woul dmake short work of that ice build up. Don't fret about the bent fins, only worry when you hear a hissing sound after jabbing it with an ice pick.

ok, so i just came back home after 2 hours.
good news is that the temp of the freezer is now 27 (instead of 65) and the fridge is 57 instead of 75.
Bad news is that i have ice forming around the components as you can see in the Pictures.
granted, i didn't screw the panel back before i left...i dont' know if that's a factor or not.
Also, i bought a volt/ohm meter. not sure how to use it or what to do with it, or if i need to do something, please let me know.

Any thoughts?

i was thinking: unplug overnight, let it thaw completely, disconnect the heater connectors over night, let them dry out. plug back in tomorrow.

thoughts?

A digital meter would be easier ...

if you have a Harbor Freight Store near you,
they have these meters, w/battery

You could put the cover back on and just unplug the ice box once a week for a few hours. Be your own defroster. That is how it was done back in the day. It is not critical to get this fixed this minute. Ice ain't gonna form for a few weeks. If you wanted you could wait on the repair. Just unplug the ice box for 2 or 3 hours a week and it can go a long time without repair providing you have all the ice removed.

that's good to know...but i'd like to get it fixed.
i know a place that sells parts for my fridge.....i just want to know which part to get....

looks like the defrost thermostat is the one....doesn't it?
cause if you notice in the last pictures i put up, ice is forming around it.

can someone please take a look at those pictures?

Ice is forming around it cause yer dang heater element is bad. Check continuity on the heater. I would be willing to bet it is shot.

that doesn't mean that the defrost thermostat is bad. although it very well could be, you have 2 other components in your defrost system remember? you need to let the freezer get to at least 10 degrees F. preferably 0 in order to test the components easier.
