Came home last night to a defrosted freezer and a puddle of water on the floor from melted ice.

The light and water/ice despenser are still working but the fridge was completely dead.  I did some investigating and found that the adaptive frost control had released the magic smoke.  Picked a new one up from local place and plugged it in and it imediately burned up.

The fridge is a 6 year old Kenmore model #596.52673202 and the defrost board is P/N 67003375

What would cause this board to short out and what components should I investigate first?

Thanks,

I would check for a component that has failed such as a shorted compressor, or possibly something grounded in the defrost circuit - look at the diagram and measure these leads for resistance and to ground

pin # 3 or #4    burned-up ?

This may be your ADC Board Pin-out wiring:

1) White - Neutral
2) empty
3) Yellow - Compressor
4) Brown - Defrost Heater
5) Red - Line
6) Blue - Cold Control
7) Orange - Defrost Heater Status

I'd start by chasing down the Line wire to the ADC. Disconnect it from the board and measure resistance from the Line wire to chassis and neutral, like kdaog said. You'll have to chase that wire down until you find the short.
