So we have the Kenmore Elite Trio french door refrigerator. A few days ago I noticed the LED screen is blank and showing Er IF. After some research, I find that is the ice maker error code. We've had many problems with the ice maker over filling the tray and the claws jamming and such, so I open the ice maker to find the whole thing is a big clog of ice. It appeared the cubes started to jam up and the water fill just kept flowing over and encased the whole thing in ice. What a mess! So, I took the ice maker out, defrosted it with a blow dryer and put it back in, and tripped the breaker and the LED reset to normal for about 2 minutes. Then back to Er IF. The little bar under the ice maker supposedly should be up until the ice gets high enough to hold it down and shut the ice maker off until the bin gets low enough to require ice again, or that's how I understand it. The little bar now hangs free. The instructions tell you not to mess with this bar or you will screw up the ice maker. Well, it seems to be screwed up. So, since this forum has been of help in the past, I check and no threads on this fridge. Other internet searches bring up all kinds of scary things on this fridge and now I'm wishing we hadn't bought this one. It, of course, is a couple of years past the warranty. The searches tell me that this code is the ice maker fans, or the ice maker itself. So, I get a new ice maker from fixitnow.com, or course, it ships promptly. I put it in and same thing. Plus the little bar has not moved. So, I am hoping that the all-knowing gurus here at The Lair can help me out. Any ideas?

And also, where are the fans for the ice maker on this unit? I suspect they are probably frozen or clogged too. Thanks!

So searching around on the back of the fridge I found the diagram that shows where the fans are. Took the freezer drawer out, got the back panel off and found ice caked everywhere. I got all the ice off, turned the power back on and both fans work fine. Threw breaker, put the freezer drawer back together, put power back on and all was fine.....for a couple of minutes until the error code showed back up. So, could it be a duct is clogged? I'm now truly at a loss, and out of options. Hopefully someone will have a golden nugget of information for me as I'm quickly losing my cool on this thing! The fridge is still nice and cool, however, thankfully.

The ice maker fan will run for about five seconds, then stop for about 20 seconds, then start again for five seconds and repeat this process twice and then the error code appears on the LCD screen and no more workie. Am I needing a new fan?

I never heard anything out of the ordinary, I am not sure the ice had stopped the fan.

So, UPDATE! Ordered a new ice maker fan and mother board to swap each and see which fixes the issue. Installed ice maker fan first, all has been well for a full day, ice maker is making ice, error code is gone. So there it is - Ice Maker Fan!!

I can. I was going to hang on to it, but if they are in short supply, I would be happy to.

No, short supply isn't an issue, and you'll undoubtedly need it, maybe even in the near future. Was just looking our for your wallet in these hard times.

LOL!!! Well I do appreciate that, not too many folks are looking out for my wallet these days. I'll be glad to send it back as I'm sure they will be available again in a few weeks when no doubt I'll need it and many other parts for this thing. They just don't make them like they used to. Hm, there's a haiku in there somewhere no doubt.
