looking for an answer Senior Apprentice Appliantologist

when I came home tonight after being on vacation the outside compressor for my air conditoner was buzzing the fan was not running and the house was around 90 degrees inside I turned of the air conditoner but it is going to be hot tomorrow. any thoughts.

I checked the unit today the model# is 38ck04835 and the serial# is 4894E09359 I moved the fan blade by hand and it turned very easily could the fan motor be burnt out.

It could be a bad: CAP CAPACITOR (DUAL RUN) 80 MFD + 5 MFD at 370 volts HC93CA081 If you have a single CAP at either rating, you could try it in the repespective circuit. 38CK04835 Wiring Diagram

Sorry but I have no caps of that type. However I have not attempted repair of my A/C unit ever where is this cap located is it in the outside compressor or is it in the inside unit? How would I be able to check the cap with an voltmeter/ohmmeter.

bad news sports fans the capictor is good the fan is burt out and the compressor is on its last legs. The technican I had check it suggested I replace the system. does anyone have a suggestion, and why do the A/C companys keep the price of their systems a secret?

I'd still try a Cap if you can find someone that has one ..... OR try taking the CAP to another HVAC store for testing ..

If anyone is keeping prices to himself, find another technician. How did this technician decide the unit is on it's last legs. Did he "Meg-Ohm" the compressor ? Use any type of test equipment ? Too many "Salesmechanics" lately. JMHO

It was not the tech keeping the prices to himself. He used a tester to check the unit and he used an ohm meter with an amp clamp on it to check the fan. Check out any AC replacement site they do not list the prices of their systems they only list how much you can save and how much rebates are. The tech was quoting me 3k to 4k depending on the system, I like to comparsion shop.

I think my Bryant (Carrier) A/C has been reading these messages ... Today, I noticed the Condenser Fan not working. Capacitor tested OK, but recommends replacement when replacing Motor. Motor doesn't turn easily  5KCP39BGN758BS 1/10 hp substitute MOT2910503 1/6 hp AOS FSE1016SV1 I haven''t ordered, yet Where did you get yours ?

I carry two low cost "universal" condenser fan motors on my truck . They are called RESCUE by Emerson. Wholesale supply house cost is about $65 . http://www.johnstonesupply.com/corp/OnlineCatalog/ProductDetails/tabid/1780/Default.aspx?Product_Code=S81-133 The rescue motors are good for any HP between 1/3 hp and 1/6 hp. One motor is 825 RPM(part #5464) and the other is 1075 RPM(part#5462) These motors are great because they can be used for most condensers. They have all the mounting holes and studs and you ever will need. They work with RHeem/rhudd side tap mount , Trane and carrier stud bottom mount, top stud mount, belly band mount , and probably a few other mounting possiblities I havent found yet. The downfall is they are a standard 48y frame, so if your OEM motor is shorter than a standard 48y frame , It may not fit in the space available. thanks Budget Appliance Repair & ACtechGUY I found FASCO D917 on a replacement list ... also Rescue #5462 Johnstone is in a near suburb Grainger (2 miles) has AOS FSE1016SV1 price shown on-line about $ 88 (may also have discount) I'll have to do some shopping after the Memorial Day week-end original GE Condenser Fan Motor How long do A/C systems last ? COOL!!! Like your fan.  Now, how long do a/c's last????????? Anywhere from 10 years to 40 years. How is that for not answering the question? Really, If you have a (WOW!!) First generation scroll compressor that is still running, you are doing very well. You are really on borrowed time at this point. The compressor could fail at any time , or it may last another 15 years. You never know when a compressor will go. Most of the time there is no indication of a problem until the compressor dies. Don't worry about the rust in the evaporator until a refrigerant leak develops. And it will leak someday. Carrier(and many others) has a real problem with leaks where the rusted steel comes in contact with the copper u-bends.
