I have a kenmore washer that is leaking fluid from where the motor attaches to the gearcase. do I have to take apart the transmission to replace the seal thrust plug?

Are you refering to the input seal..item #21 below? If so, no you only have to remove the motor.

Tools you will need.....

Drill with 1/8" drill bit

Needle nose pliers

Deep well socket (diameter same as seal)

Hammer

Remove the cabinet from the machine and lean the machine back against the wall.

Tie the pump back or remove it, which ever you prefer.

Remove the motor

Drill 2 holes in the seal about 1/8" apart (try to stay in the middle of the seal (you will only go about 1/8" deep). As soon as you can tell your through the seal stop.

Insert needle nose pliers into the 2 holes, pry down hard and the seal will pop out.

Propably won't need to add any oil unless you lost a tremendous amount. If you fell like you need to you can add and ounce or two of 90W gear oil..now would be the time to do it where the seal was you can see the holes, just squirt it in.

Clean the hole where the seal was with a rag

Put a little oil on the sides of the new seal and press it as far as you can get it (usually all the way) follow up by tapping it with the socket to seat.

Your all finished...reassemble.

Note: the seal kit comes with 2 seal...you will only use the one that is the same size as your old one and discard the other.
