Serial number: FK4704572 My girlfriend commented that the dishwasher might need looked at since it wasn't draining and was full of nasty water. This is of course AFTER she had unloaded it and AFTER I commented of a gritty texture and strange taste to dinner. So following this: http://fixitnow.com/wp/2008/11/14/older-whirlpool-kenmore-dishwasher-wont-drain/ I ended up cleaning the check valve and taking a bunch of rice out of the drain hose. If course, I used my sink sprayer to clear the hose and then decided to turn on the disposal, forgetting that I had the hose I had just removed from the side of it in my hand. Anyhow, two questions: The Samurai says that this is a older model made back in the day... How old? Is this thing end of life? Also, there's a large hexagonal nut on a long shaft that goes into one side of the motor. What is this shaft and nut?

As far as I'm concerned that is one of the best dishwashers you can get. Don't know how much longer they will still be available as they are phasing out anything that isn't a water saver for all the energy rules. The large hexagon nut on the shaft screwed into the side of the motor is a harmonic noise damper, (lowers the noise/vibrations of the motor).

^ That's why I grabbed it... I do all my appliance shopping at the local "Habitat for Humanity ReStore", off the curb, at the scrap yard, or on CraigsList... Underneath, it looks very simple. Very few parts to fail. I worked on a buddy's dishwasher that had separate wash and drain pumps. It was a PITA. And I hate wasting all the good parts when one major one goes bad. His main wash pump had gone, but the drain pump was still good. $100 for the new pump... That's how much this whole unit cost me. Update (It won't allow me to post a new thread, however this is the same machine with a different problem.) Wife suspects that the washer hasn't been working for a while now. I usually run it when we're asleep, but I have noticed random dirty dishes from time to time. She decided to run it while we were eating desert, so I was around to hear it... It'll fill with water. Once full, it'll go into wash mode and pump water through the wash arms for half a second. (I can't even get "One-Mississippi" out.) It'll immediately stop, pause for a second and go into drain mode. Draining will complete and it'll fill again and do it all over again. I have observed water come out of the spray arms. (Used a screwdriver to close the door switch.) It does drain properly and fully. I have removed the lower spray arm and the cover for the pump. The impeller looks good. There is a screen device around the pump impeller that looks like a flying saucer with a hole in the middle. It's got lots of crud inside stuck to the screen. I need to separate the two halves of this to get at the inside and rinse this stuff out. I can not take this thing apart. What else should I look into on this machine?

According to the service manuals above, the flying saucer unit is a "Separator" and it is not serviceable. I will order another one. Additionally, I will test the pressure switch. It appears to advance the cycle when it detects heavy soil.

Nevermind... I was able to rinse enough of the gunk out of the separator with my sink sprayer to get it running. Doing a load of dishes now. Pressure switch is fine, it was doing its job, sensing a clogged separator.
