i recently had a call for a noisey GE dryer and yup... it was one of those noises that made me say "holy shit!" and yank the door open to stop it once dismantled i first noted that the glides were gone and the plastic bearing they mount to was worn through in spots. but.... this had been repaired, by attaching self adhesive felt strips like you paste to the bottom of chair legs to prevent floor scrathes. and this surely wasn't the noise i had heard after drum removal i found.... the wrong motor installed, the one in the machine was too short to reach the rear clamp. but this had been solved by.... a section of rubber floor mat from a car rolled up, which was secured to the motor by 2 hose clamps joined togeather, other end of mat had extra rubber rolled over it to make a snug fit for the clamp noise was motor flexing and bashing into bottom of drum you would think this is where it ends.... NOT! element had a repair... about 3 insulators worth of coil where stretched straight to extend it, this coil wire had been run through the terminal block and mareted directly to its wire this was a rental and a new tenant that was complaining about the noise, so god only knows how long this abortion had been in use before the new tenant

WOW!! The guy that did that must've been some sort of genius, albeit a dangerous one. That's some sort of skill to adapt the wrong motor to work on that machine!!

Should have snapped a picture of that 1. I had a Whirlpool dryer the other day that ran and sounded half way decent. I took it apart and couldn't believe my eyes. This was an extra capacity top filter dryer. There was no rear felt strip on the back of the drum, somehow it was in the center of the drum under the belt. After scrathcin ma head and doing some PI work I concluded that someone had taken a frigidaire belt and tried to install it but it was too long so they got a rear felt strip off a front filter dryer and installed it on the drum which fit nice and tight and then put the belt in the center of it and did away with the idler pulley and hooked the belt directly to the motor. Someone put some real thought into this rig..I was slightly impressed.

the picture i would have loved to have seen was an old GE dryer that had worn away its glides, so the worn glides had been replaced with.... the rear wheels from a shopping cart one of our other techs saw this and said the machine ran great and he actually replaced the belt on the unit <shrug>
