I have a Kenmore front loader manufactured in 02/02. As so many others it began to sound like I had aircraft taking off in my house. I was told it was most likely the bearing. Got the sucker torn apart today and the spider is broken in 3 places and is badly corroded. How do I know if the bearing are also bad? I saw photos of the tub back with discoloration inside and out, but my back is very clean. Has anyone had any luck getting Sears to cover the new tub, since they will not sell the spider separately? If so, do you have any advise you would share? Thank you, Sue

Hi Sue, the spin basket is covered under warranty, part only. The rear tub half however is not. You will have to pay the basic charge to Sears to have a tech come out to verify thst the basket is indeed broken and order the part. He or she will then order the part direct shipped to your home and schedule a return service call to install the part with you paying the labor. Since it would be pointless to replace one without the other, you would be most likely be on the hook for the rear tub half. While the arguement could be made that the rear half replacement would be unneccesary had the basket not failed, I dont think youll have much luck getting a markdown from management. Ill bet you have been using non HE detergent, right?

Thank you for the advise. I'm sure Sears would say I used nonHE, but honestly I have used HE (also grey water safe) since my first load. I have read that some people have replaced just the bearings and seal, not the whole back with the bearings, but I can't find info on where to order the bearings and seal. Sue

bearings and seal not normally sold separately.. there was a thread about someone who found some similar, but after replacing them, said if he had to do it again, he'd just replace the whole Tub. If Sears warranties your model, check to see how much you'd be in for.

Parts arrived today (new basket and rear tub/rearings). The only problem I am having is getting the boot spring back on. Do I have to remove the boot from the door opening to get the spring back on? Also, after installing the vanes into the new basket do you recommend cutting down the 3 screws to prevent them from cutting into the tub? Thank you for all your help, I hope to never set foot in the laundromat again. Sue

The spring can be a little tough to get on but you shouldn't have to remove the boot. With spring towards bottom start at the top going around both sides. When it start to get tough just hold one side in place while you work the remainder of the other side into place with a small screwdriver, butter knife, or like object (just becareful not to puncture the boot) as far as the screws...I would leave them as they are as long as they are the factory screws.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is the spray white lithium okay? Do I just coat the shaft with it? And put it around the new bearings? A thick coating?
