Well last week I was here looking for help for our Frigidaire Gallery front load washer.  Never did figure out exactly what the problem was, the drum or basket had come loose from whatever holds it steady and it was banging all over the place during the spin cycle, we are still plan to take the tub off to see if the spider arms are broken just for the sake of knowing.   So we went today and bought an Estate top load washer, it is supposed to be made by Whirlpool.  When I called our local appliance repair shop they said all front load washers are doomed.  So we went with a top load today, well we get it home and all hooked up and start the first load, when it gets going it sounds a little louder than we had expected but just thought maybe we didnt have it completely level and had planned on checking it again after the load was done.  When I got all the clothes out, I noticed the basket was moving excessively.  When I read thru the book under troubleshooting it says = the basket moves during wash, this is normal.  Well the basket is VERY movable when the washer is off.  Does anyone own one of these washers?  Can you tell me is it supposed to be that way? or did we get a lemon today.

Maybe I'll just get a washboard and some rocks.

Estate is the Whirlpool Washers,  just the economy line with less fancy stuff to break...yes the insides move all around when off, on the slide plate....the direct drive washer is the best washer on the market...good choice.

Frigidaire Gallery - I've been out on a lot of these. Take the top panel off by removing the screws in the rear, and then sliding it back. There are two big silver springs that support the drum, and they're hooked into the frame at the top. I've seen these springs actually break.

But, it's usually in part to the plastic shocks breaking apart that support the drum on the bottom. You'll have to remove the two 1/4" screws that hold the kickplate on the front of the machine to see if your shocks need to be replaced. The shocks have also been updated to a new part number.

AND THEN, if the springs broke loose at the top and your drum has collapsed and is crushing your coin trap (the rubber hose contraption that connects the drum to the pump), you may want to go ahead and change that out as well.

I changed out the springs and shocks, and was running a test when I noticed slight drippage from the coin trap. I small pin inside the trap had poked through. The customer turned their nose up at the thought of replacing another part, and told me to take everything off. Ughghghgh.....

Estate washer - It's normal. When I remove the frame on a Whirlpool, almost every customer asks me if it's supposed to move around like that. Short answer: Everything's fine, bro.

Well, I guess with everyone inspecting the new washer and how loose we thought the basket was we managed to break it.  2nd broken washer in a 2 weeks.  Not a happy camper.  I used it the second time and it walked about 3 feet across my laundry room!  Sounded like an airplane taking off inside the house.  We went to Lowes the next day and bought yet another.  Its a Roper by Whirlpool top load.  To our surprise the basket is loose, but we decided maybe we shouldnt inspect it as roughly as we did the otherl, lol.  So we left it alone and started a load of laundry and YAY it works.  My mother in laws top load washer doesnt move at all, the basket is very sturdy in its place, and we had a front load for so long we couldnt remember how a top load was suppose to be.  Guess its all ok.  Thanks for all the info.

Anyone have an opinion about a Roper?

Oh and also we were told we could buy something to go in the agitator to dispense the fabric softener automatically.

Roper is another one of Whirlpool's "No Frills" value brands. It's a very relaible machine.

Liquid fabric softener should be taken off the shelves, in my opinion, it makes a disgusting mess of the wash basket in the machine that promotes mold growth.
