So, this compactor has burnt up (literally, smoke and everything) its second motor. Not wanting to confirm my insanity, I need to do something different this time, something in addition to just replacing the motor again. Has anyone seen this symptom - one day, from its top rest position, instead of driving the ram down as usual, the compactor motor suddenly starts switching back and forth as fast as it can until, after 10 seconds or so, the smoke starts and the circuit breaker pops. Now it's a toaster!
I measured the current drop across the limit switches (far more reliable indicator of trouble than just resistance), and they check good. What else is there? Are these motors just crap, or what? Is there a different, better motor that might bolt in to this application? ( book says the official replacement part is Motor #269349 at http://www.repairclinic.com/GE-Trash-Compactor-Parts?s=b3a5c203 )
The benefit of your experience would be greatly appreciated.

May need to replace the ram screw, too. Could be slightly bent placing an excessive load on the motor.

Ah - funny you should mention that. A few months ago, the up-limit switch came loose, causing the screw to just keep turning, driving the trunnion nut right off the end, through (!) the retaining bracket, destroying the nut and thoroughly dinging up the threads on the end. Replaced bracket, screw, switch, and trunnion at that point.

Y'know, my inlaws have a compactor in their kitchen - it's 30+ years old and has never needed anything fixed. Mine, however, has already taken more in parts than it's original cost, and it's only 5 years old at this point. And - it's a 12" model that all mfr's have simultaneously stopped producing. It's, like, some kind of conspiracy! I can't replace it - I have to keep fixing it!
