looks like a symptom of a Sealed System leak.

I guess at this point I should call a service tech? One good thing - the ice maker and water dispenser started to magically work today!

based on what you see in the pics - could it be adpative defrost? or is sealed system more likely?

thanks

oh.. and add insult to injury - the ice maker works, but when I go to get water out of the fountain.. it is still sending it out the icemaker tube as well as the fountain :(

no, the ADC only controls the Compressor (and Fans) and the Defrost Cycle ...

The Evaporator should be completely, even, frosted

Just an update - I removed the light shield and Styrofoam deflector and took off the air damper in an effort to save the food until I figure out what to do. Once I did that, the temp in the fridge dropped to about 27 F with the freezer on cooling level #8. I backed it off to 5 and the temps held steady at 37 F.. not too bad. In the meantime I called morningstar appliance here in cincinnati - the tech that came out thinks its more of an airflow issue and recommends replacing the airdamper control as mentioned in technical bulliten TDR-0010A. When I took off the evaporator cover in the freezer it looked like there was less frost and ice - kind of like it was trying to defrost now that the air was flowing, but it may have been an illusion. The tech put the styrofoam and light shield back up - since then the temps have climbed up to 42 F. The freezer is holding at 0 F - so yeah its a good bet there is an airflow problem, however, it may be the sign of a larger problem. My next step is to give it a few days to see if the evap coil is really slowly defrosting or if its just in my head. If it does defrost, then I will probably replace the autodamper temp control - if not, then I am back to square 1 and like you all said it is more than likely a sealed system problem. Does what I am saying make sense? I still have the damper off and have taped the rear evap shield behind the ice maker.

The pictures of the Evaporator do not indicate a Defrost problem.

It's shows a problem with the Sealed System (leak) and is low on Freon,

and the Compressor can't frost the Evaporator completely, evenly.
