I have a frigidaire gallery front loading washer that is just under 5 years old. A few weeks ago I heard a huge "ruckus" come from the washer in the middle of a spin cycle. When I opened the door to check it out I noticed the drum is moving all over the place. When we took the back of the washer off the spider arms that I have read so much about were in tact. Not broken or cracked or anything. We then took the bottom panel off the front of the washer and noticed the shocks were broken. HOORAY, we thought we had found the problem. We ordered the shocks and replaced them. Of coarse that was not the problem, apparently the real problem caused the shocks to break when the drum was banging all around. The drum does feel tighter at the bottom now, doesnt seem as mobile when you try to shake it by hand, but the top is still very loose. So I wondered if there are shocks at the top also? I have read so much, somewhere I read that the drum rests in a plastic saddle attatched to the front of the washer and sometimes the drum comes out of that saddle. I called a local repairman today and they thought maybe it was a bearing? They didnt even want to come and look at it!!! LOL, just told me to go buy a new washer. I was very shocked that they didnt want to come and take my $100+. And they said never to buy a frigidaire or GE or a front load. I would rather pay $100 to fix it for the time being than to spend $500 or more to buy a brand new one. Does anyone have any suggestion on what I should look for? Thanks Would be glad to include any pictures if there is something you need to see.

The chances are likely that the main, and only bearing that holds the spin basket has broken loose of its mount and will entail replacing the entire rear half of the outer tub. A $100 repair? Ha! Not likely. The spider may still be ok but then again, if I were doing that job, I'd have it out in the van just in case. Try more like 4-600 with parts and the tremendous amount of labor affixed to repairing it. But still in spite of the damning charactoristics of this machine, I still thing its a pretty good washer, and always be sure youre using HE detergents. Bob coastalappliances.com

You have no idea if the spider arms are broken/cracked by taking the back off. What you were looking at is the pulley. It's very likely the spider is broken from your description of your problem. The spider is the "Y" aluminum assembly that the stainless tub attaches to and the also the shaft that the pulley you looked at is attached to. Open the door and just try to move the inner stainless spin basket up/down/sideways without a lot of force, you want to see if the stainless basket is moving without actually moving the outer wash tub. If you get movement of basket without the same movement in outer tub the spider is broken.

Ok, I didnt realize the spider arms were inside the tub on the back of the drum. The silver y that we saw on the back of the tub looked like what we thought was the spider arm. We will work on removing the tub in the next few days, but I dont think its that. I checked what you said about the drum moving with or without the tub moving. Any effort to move the drum causes the tub to move, they are still connected by whatever connects them inside the tub, its like the tub is loose from something, with the bottom panel off the front of the washer we can see that the loud "ruckus" is the tub banging all over during the spin cycle.

It could still be the spider broken, if only one of the arms are broken you won't be able to notice by feel as easily if two arms broke. When trying to move the inner spin basket up/down, turn the basket so each of the spider arms are pointing straight up and try up/down at each of the 3 arm positions and see if you notice one that gives you more movement.

Have you take the top panel off to check the springs? I've seen the spring hooks break off after the shocks break because it can't support the load. Remove the two screws that hold the top panel on and slide it back. There should be two big silver springs attaching the drum to the frame at the top. There are are two useless strips of metal that cover the springs to keep it from jumping out of its bracket. 134144700 - Springs are sold separately and run about $25/each. I'm assuming you got the upgraded shocks - 134564200

The springs are still holding. We havent managed to take the tub out yet to look inside to see if the spider arms are broken. We had to go ahead and buy a new washer so we've put off inspecting the old one for a little while, but do plan on taking it apart just because it will drive me crazy until I figure out what it is. We bought a Roper by whirlpool TOP LOAD. Will never buy another front load I dont think. I'll update when we get the tub out. Thanks !
