 Our 8 year old fridge and freezer thaws (ice melts) and warms the refrigerator, then gets cold and freezes solid again. Not sure if it is a temp control problem or defrost control problem or? Fan seems to run. Compressor is good (was checked out).

 It could be that the Defrost Terminator Bi-Metal Switch is stuck closed and not turning off the Defrost Heater 
when the Evaporator Coil temperature reaches 54F during the 25 minute Defrost Cycle.

 Could also be a moisture restriction in the sealed system.  Need to take a look at the evaporator when it is running cold and see if the frost pattern on the coils is even. If not;  you may have a restriction, which would give you these symtoms.
