My old dishwasher works fine except that now the final drain before the dry cycle does not happen during the regular wash (you can hear when it clicks to start).  After an hour, however, it does drain.  (This occurred a few times over a couple of months, and now always.)

Though it doesn't initially drain, the dry cycle will then start (i.e., the fan starts; the element is under water).  The drying is the only cycle that works: no response in any other position of the timer control.  The machine has sani-wash and power-dry options; no difference with/without any option.

My routine now is to stop the machine when it reaches that point, wait 1 hour, and then start the machine again.

There's been no change in power supply, water supply, water temperature, soap, frequency of use, number of dishes, level of cleaning, machine noise.  It seems heat releated.  Besides requesting for possible fixes, can anyone describe exactly how the timer control works?  I'm expecting it's like an old washing machine's, only much simpler.  Thanks.

Thanks for the reply RegUS.  There's some sort of thermal overload switch cutting in then?  And suggests a failing motor?

ye ol' belt drive dishwasher! Try running it a while with the belt disconnected, if motor cuts out then, it requires replacement. If not, likely needs a new pump ass'y - either way will be expensive

Looks like alot of the parts are NLA for these old machines

Thanks all.  Without a schematic, I didn't know how to run the motor directly.  I figured I could skip past the water cycles to run the motor, but I decided on another experiment first:  I blew a fan on the motor while running a regular cycle to see if enough heat was dissipated to complete the cycle.  It did not finish, and in fact, quit even earlier.  I could also detect a slight odor.  I'm assuming the motor's failing, and I'm looking at new machines.
