My Ge PWD7800 is making a weird sort of rumbling sound when it's washing, sort of sounds like the spray arm is loose.  But I pulled the spray arm out and ran it but it still makes the noise when washing, draining it's not there since the drain pump is running.

I guess the only thing it could be is the pump, it vaguely sounds like a cavitating pump.   Amy ideas/ solutions short of tearing everything apart?  Am I looking in the wrong area?

Check this out....

The sound is almost always caused by a worn docking cone “O” ring on the main conduit. When the docking cone “O” ring wears, the mid level spray arm conduit is no longer constrained and it can vibrate against the docking cone, making the “growling” or vibrating sound. The recommended repair for this problem is to replace the WD12X10059 (titanium) or WD12X10121 (grey) docking cone.

Take the kick plate off and make no parts of the motor, pump or solonoid  is resting on the floor when running or not. I have seen the pump solonoid cause this problem; there is very close clearance to the floor on these.

Thanks for the tip, but this is definitely in the tub. It's odd, now it comes and goes. I examined the docking ring as Pegi suggested, it looks fine, and I felt it and after that the noise went away. Now it's returned as I mentioned occasionally. Weird.

I guess the next step is to replace the O ring.
