sorry ...should have remembered to include model numbers...apparently it is on both the rfg297aa...and the rf267abb.....im wondering if it isn't just a shortage of some type of part for manufacturing, that could be the reason for unavailablity... just thought someone here may know why we couldn't order these .....

I was just in Sears today an noticed a sign on some of the refrig's that they were voluntarily removed from the energy star rating program. I didn't happen to notice what brand they were, wonder if that is something to do with it? It was a French door model. rumor has it that it may have to do with the icemakers...seems this isn't just a sears issue, rather a manufacturing issue....

They are contracting computer repair companies to replace the ice maker buckets, this puts a bitter taste in my mouth about samsung. The point of warranty work is you take a flat rate and you get a balance of easy and hard calls so it usually evens out. They are giving the easy calls away to computer companies at a reduced price so the appliance servicers get stuck with all of the harder jobs.

As far as the energy star thing goes i have only heard of LG having that issue. I think they recieved their rating with out the mullion heater installed? The upgrade kit to make them energy star certified comes with foam strips to better insulate the gaskets around the mullion, a bypass for the mullion heater, and a new circuit board. I seam to recall viking having similar issues in the past. They were shipping the fridges with the heaters disconnected and if a sweating complaing came up the servicer was to connect the heater.

Here's my customer story on this. Bought a Samsung RFG297 and the ice maker quit making ice, R1 code which means according to the tag on the back Ice maker failure. No DuH! The auger will work. I called a repair guy out and one company wouldn't even come out. The next company came out anf couldn't figure it out so they ordered a new ice maker and control moule. Parts never showed up and then Samsung called and said I could exchange it for a new one at the store or get a refund. Had to cut the cord and send in the cod and serial number tag. Got my refund. I have to dispose of the fridge myself so its sitting here until i get around to doing that. Can anyone explain the icemaker operation and what things I can check to see if I can rig it if you know what I mean. I can read a diagram and diagnose problems if I can understand the mechanics. Can't find a diagram anywhere or a pinpoint test for the R1 failure. Also can't get anything from Samsung on it. Can someone explain how it works. it has a reset button but taht doesn't do anything. One clue is the door was left open over night and the ice level arm seemed to be stuck. I took it apart and frred it up but the ice maker still doesn't work. It does seem suspicious that samsung was so willing to give me a refund. Any new news on this?

I did hear from a customer a similar situation with the french door LG. The issue is not running the ice storage compartment at the coldest temp during the test. I would guess Samsung tested the same way and hasn't been willing to cooperate with the DOE. The Kenmore french door model (made by LG, starts with 795) was pulled from the energy star program. While we are kicking a dead dog (Samsung) - why would they build a refrigerator that requires replacing the entire evaporator if the defrost heater goes bad??? They don't tell the consumer that during the sale. If I were Sears, Best Buy or anyone else I would pull every one of these from my sales floor.

Related story....Back in march I requested a service manual for the Samsung rf267.......Could not get anywhere with Shimsham, so I never went to do the service call ( the customer and I talked on the phone ) ..........The customer called the other day and said that Shimsham gave him all his money back..They told him to cut the end off of cord and remove the data label and send it into Shimsham..........He wanted to know if I wanted the refer because it is now in his garage.......I said sure I will take it.....I figure I could dismember it and see what makes it tick.......I replaced the plug, plugged it in and it has been up and running, plus making ice.......Nice looking unit ............Alot of electrinics to go wrong....$$$$ I don't think I will use it myself, I do not want to be working on the refer every other month......I will keep my 10 year old K/A KSRS 22 The Shimsham will make a nice beer cooler at the warehouse thou
