My washer will start up, fill with water, agitate, drain and spin. Then after filling again for the rinse cycle it will again agitate and drain but will not spin. I can of course hear the motor running because it will drain and continue to run after the water is no longer visable in the tub.

The water valve will energize and shoot a small amout of water as is I believe normal during a spin cycle.

I used a screwdriver to make the lid switch so I could observe the operation of the machine. I noticed that while the water is still visable in the tub but draining I can remove the screwdriver and put it back then it will spin.

My wife is tired of making two trips downstairs to get one load of laundry done and is considering slicing open my belly, spilling my steaming entrails onto our floor.

Please master help.

After that second agitation, there should be a pause before it starts spinning. This lets the washer transmission shift into neutral during the while the tub is being pumped out. If you get the aforementioned pause, then the problem is the neutral drain gears in the transmission-- very inexpensive part but a non-trivial repair job. OTOH, if no pause, then you have a bad timer.

Didn't know the pause was so important. It does pause after agitating. It pauses for about 3 or4 minutes on a small load before beginning to drain.

So even though I can unmake and remake the lid switch and make it spin it still means the neutral drain gears are the problem?

Can you point me in the right direction for this non-trivial repair job? Or is this one of those things where a fellow should just replace the transmission?

It sounds like your Transmission is going into Neutral Drain (and pumping out the water without Spinning),

but it then needs a 3 to 5 second pause (by the Timer), to get it out of Neutral Drain and start Spinning.

So... by opening & closing the lid I'm artificially giving it a pause. Therfore the timer is the problem, right?

Could I double check by removing the power lead of the timer motor to simulate a pause?

no, that won't disconnect the power to the Washer Motor....

the Washer Motor contacts in the Timer are still closed...

From this part of your post, I can pretty much guarantee you it's a bad timer.

If it pause for 3 or 4 minutes then begins to drain, you have missed the 3-5 second motor pause. The pause is at about 2 minutes, as all water should be drained within 2 minutes, then timer causes the motor to pause for 3-5 seconds and then restarts, to shift out of neutral drain.

You most likely have some bad motor spin contacts causing this long pause before it actually starts to drain/spin. In that 3 or 4 minutes it should have been draining out the water for 2 minutes, then the 3-5 second pause, then restart for spin and spin for 3 or 4 minutes, (or much longer on final spin), depending on the cycle your in.

Bought the timer and installed. That was it. Tried the "sorry dear , didn't hear you" adjustment. That seems to help also.
