Plan 'B' .....If there is oil in the foam where the heat exchanger enters the freezer at the rear, that is compressor oil..........It is non-repairable, I have tried..... heat exchanger at the opening thru the wall, Too much plastic to get a 1300 Degree flame to repair....It is easier to replace the evaporator and the heat exchanger...... pull out the unit, cut the exchanger line at the top....pull the evap, and exch, from the freezer section....... with the new parts, braze the exch, to the evap. coils ...push the exch, thru the rear wall, reattach.... New filter drier, recharge.......................It is more involved then written here but you get the idea............. Try the condenser motor first...............

OK #1 Timer Defroster is bad and he will replace the Bimetl-def parts under $100.00 , already paid the $125.00 service call two weeks ago. , that should last to wait 2 weeks to get the new on in service. And #2 And Yes a small leak in the closed system, he took his freon monitor and it went crazy. SO I will save $2,500.00 and credit it to my new SubZero. netted the 5800-2500 will be $3,300.00 for a new unit. Everyone like that accounting :} I am so glad this different Expert did have experience and knew to use his Freon unit to find the leaks in the freezer and prove the sealed system would need to be replaced now or very soon. I really don't understand why no leak on the top so it was on the copper line in the rear , why they did not use better copper pipes. It seams like that was the real cause of the leak and I understand why everything has to come out of it to get the liner out to rebuild it. A savings of $2.00 and everything else still works fine, now $2500.00. They have a 90 day warranty , so I can tell the wife I did that :} And barganed the Appliance company down. So I will have him change the Timer Defroster and not anything else and purchase a Sub Zero , Last years Model $5800.00 2K less than the new 2009 units. Again Thank you all for giving me the information to make a better decision on what to do. Last edited on Wed Mar 18th, 2009 10:33 pm by BlueIceCPA |

Good choice, IMO subzero is a much better brand. Subzero is also really good about taking care of their customers. Ive had them pay to fix sealed system issues that were out of warranty.

SO 1st morning after the fix , everything is fine. Now with the Baffel back on the top is -10 and the bottom is ~ 20. SO Next Friday SubZero will be installed and this week we wont be inconvenienced any more. Unless the low freon leak causes something else to go amok. Again thanks and I will let everyone know if this fix sticks for 7 days.
