My washing machine will fill and drain water and run through the cycles.  But when it should agitate or spin it makes a loud metal tapping sound and no movement (agitate or spin).  I'm not sure what the problem is motor, gear case or something else???

What do you think is causing the problem?

Probably a broken coupler between the motor and transmission, these are designed to break if they are overloaded. Assuming this is a direct drive washer.

Broken drive coupling between the motor and transmission. Easy fix, I believe our host has a link to describe repair. you need part# 285753.
