The DW is about 5yrs old and started making more and more noise in the last month. I suspect it's a bearing in the pump, if there is such a thing. The motor bearings should be fine because the drain cycle is quite. Does the pump still spin while draining? Could it be something stuck in there? I don't see how because there is fine filter under the spray arm as fine as a dryer lint screen. I am about to take it apart and wanted to see if anyone can help with the disassembly. Under the bottom spray arm there are four star head screws. I have to go buy the tool. Will I be able to get everything out from the inside or do I have to take out the unit? Where can I get/buy a service manual? The one in the kick panel has no mechanical info. Do they publish something like a Chilton book for this unit? Thank you.

Sorry about that. I thought I would prevent myself from forgetting to give out vendor/model info by making it part of my login name. The vendor is Knemore, Elite series and the model number is 665.16912 Last night I cleaned out the inside basin and found a bunch of junk. Stil grinding away and it sounds like it's coming from under the unit, with the kick panel removed. Is there a seal that typically wears out? Is there a kit I can buy, or do people replace the whole motor and pump assy? How about a service manual? I think there is a separate drain pump, so that would explain why the drain cycle is quiet.

I took the damn thing apart. I took out the motor/pump and noticed it has been leaking. The leak is small enough that it doesn't make a puddle, but it must have damaged the seal. The pix below is the motor. Attachment: dshwshr1.JPG (Downloaded 66 times)

I took a picture of the leak stains. See attachment. I then powered up the motor outside the washer to listen for the same noise. It's not a smooth spin, so it's definetly the seal. I can buy a whole assembly for $113. Or the seal for $17. However, I can't figure out how to take the impeller apart to get to the seals. Do I have to unbolt the motor cage? What do you recommend? Should I just replace the whole thing? It seems such a waste to throw away an otherwise perfect moror. Since I have everything open, I figured I would clean it all up. I can't take the macerator box apart. There is a screw inside the sump, but the cover won't budge. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Attachment: dshwshr2.JPG (Downloaded 44 times)

If it's less than 5 years old, the motor/pump assembly should still be under warranty. If so, Sears may send you the part free of charge. This dishwasher was made by Whirlpool and, if it were branded as such, I know Whirlpool would send you the part because I've seen them do that on several occasions. May you be so fortunate with Sears.

The appliance is branded Kenmore. I'll check the warranty with Sears. Thanks. I figured out how to unscrew the impeller. I blocked the rotor with a screw driver from the rear and unscrewed the impeller. The motor shaft is threaded. What I found is a mess. The pump seal leaked and corroded the motor shaft bearing. See pix. I think I'll buy a whole new morot/pump assembly. Unless I find a place who will recondition the bearing for me. Too bad. I'm going to put it all back together until I get a new motor assy... Don't care how loud it is, I'm not washing the dishes!!! BTW: check out http://www.sears.com/partsdirect They have all the assembly drawings (see picture's background) and parts list. They also have a phone number to place the order and have it shipped to you: 1-800-366-7278 6am-11pm CST. Thanks Samurai. I called Sears and ordered the motor+pump assembly without the tub. Unfortunately I don't have additional warranty for the motor. They also told me they won't match the price from Repair Clinic because they don't offer the same warranty and return policy. What sold me on it is that, if there is anything wrong with the replacement. I can return it to the local Sears Service Center. The price difference was $30. Sears $150 shipped, Repair Clinic $120. I'm still not used to this Internet buy/sell. I'll let you know how the replacement works out. Kenmore

The warranty on parts from Sears is 90 days is the difference in the warranty policy. If bought from a FSP dist, it has a years warranty. Assume the parts from here have the year warranty also? The Samuair also lets you return any part, less the shipping for any reason.

( Thats the way Sears looks at it ) If a unit is over 5 yrs old your on your own ... part of the problem is you bought a new model at the time .... Its like buying the new version of Windows when it comes out ... They always have to change alot of items ....I curse the heck out of em .... In the future before buying .... come to this board and ask what we put in our houses when we buy ... I'll tell ya this..... if your brand loyal youre done.... and if ya read consumer reports your screwed ...

I did get a new pump/motor unit and installed it. Problem fixed. I was saying that I got screwed by the price difference between Repairclinic and Sears. Yes, I am a bit surprised the motor died within 5 years, but it wasn't the motor's fault. The impeller seal leaked and ruined the motor bearing. If I had noticed the tiny puddle under the machine, I might have bought the new seal and it would have kept going another 5 years. Now that I know, I'll stick my head under there every now and then. Now, I don't remember how quiet the DW was when I bought it, but I think my drain pum is a bit loud...
