I'm experiencing problems identical to those posted by a member a couple of years ago.  To quote original post:

"Our dryer is about 7 years old.  It has had some trouble getting going recently. When you push the button, it buzzes and tries to turn the drum.  It gives off a smell of ozone. I think the motor's shot."

Conditions have been getting progressively worse.  I've noticed that problems are worse when repetitively cycling the dryer, i.e. back-to-back-to-back loads (we have a large family!)  In researching similar symptoms, other culprits have included the timer and/or push-to-start switch.

I'm inclined to believe it's the motor, because it seems the drum is a bit "tight" when spun manually.  How freely should it spin?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Most likely a motor going bad or something causing a drag on the motor, could be something in the blower wheel, drum rollers dragging.  Take the dryer apart and see if the motor runs ok with the belt off, see if the motor shaft is hard to turn with the belt off....see if the drum rollers are gummed up, etc....

Thanks for the prompt response!  Took the dryer apart Thursday night and noted that the motor itself was not turning easily.  Was able to get a replacement motor and belt on Friday, and was fully operational Friday night.

Thanks for your help!

I have a Maytag Electric Dryer Model MDE9306ayw that has the same problems.  When the start button was pushed it buzzed very loudly.  My son taped the door button and was turning the drum while pressing the start button.  That worked for awhile, but now it doesn't start.  How does the dryer case disassemble and what and how should it be tested.  I am great at following instructions, but rotten with diagnosing problems.

Thanks
