Hello,

I have this laptop for 3 years now. It serve me well and still going although one afternoon it started to slow down downloading a page. So I took it to my trusted computer shop. They said my only reading 198MB. What the hell! No wonder why. the guy said to upgrade my RAM to 1gig since my XP will read up to 1gig any over than than that is a waste (useless) so I heard. Original RAM in the slot is 256 x 2 ( it has 2 slots). I install 1gig on one slot spend $48 leaving the other empty and reads 198MB, pc was slow. Switch slot vise versa, this time reads 448 and speed up decently.

I told the guy i wanted to upgrade it to 1gig of RAM to kick up a notch so he checked my BIOS and said it only up to 448MB So the two 512MB that i had it installed on both slot still reads utilizing 448 rather 1gig of RAM. Techie guy said there might be something wrong with one of the RAM slot. Asked if he can fix it, said no can do. Need to replace whole motherboard or upgrade BIOS. I don't know.

Any recomendation? I need second opinion.

Advance mahalo.

Your system should be able to read 1 gig of ram. Since it went that low. It could be a couple of things. One is in bios that may have a software install mode that limits memory to 256mb total minus the 64mb for video memory.
Since you had 256mb chips, if one went bad , you'd have the same. Powering up with one chip in the first slot only will tell you if you have a bad chip or slot. Since you bought 512mb chips, you would have the same result only double so the 448 is in line. So if you have 448 with either chip, I'd look at the slot. If with one chip, you have 192mb, I would look at you may have hi density chips instead of low density. Most computers do not use hi density chips

Thanks for the  reply. Sorry i didn't get back at this for a while. But here it is. After trial and error on the chip exchange testing on the slots. Hence I'm not getting the maximum 1gig of RAM on two 512 chip, I go ahead and put a pair of 1gig chip and there I have finally have 960MB of RAM and performance is much better. Boots up faster than before, page download faster and I feel much better. Local store let me return the pair of 512 chips and paid the difference on pair of 1gig chips I'm using now. My total expence was $110. $55 each 1gig chip. So. Mahalo to you volleyball. I appreciate your great input. Many thanks. Best regards.
