Ok, we have a dishwasher that STINKS! I mean, it's REALLY FOUL! The stink comes from a constant buildup of black, stinky... $#!†. I mean, the DOD could use this in some form of germ warfare! It's obviously food waste. We can run a cycle with bleach, but after a few more cycles it's goes back to stinky. Possibly relevant factors: 1. We have water with lots of iron and manganese in it (i.e., I only ever have a white shirt for about a week). 2. We use an "organic" type of detergent (Melaleuca--it's safe to use, but I'm guessing THAT's the culprit). 3. We eat a lot of fermented mushroom jelly (just kidding--wanted to see if you were paying attention). 4. The dishwasher doesn't have an air trap, the drain just goes up as high as possible below the countertop, then drops about a foot before it goes into the sink trap. 5. The house has a graywater system (well--sort of a system--actually, no system, it just dumps the graywater onto the ground outside. I know it's WAYYYY beyond "not up to code." Don't blame me, we bought the house that way.) My next step is to buy some REAL detergent and try that. But if there's anybody who has some other ideas, PLEASE LET ME KNOW... I CAN'T STAND THE SMELL!

And remember, no matter what the saleman says, it's a dish washer, not a garbage diposal. Dump any food waste into the garbage before washing.

Hello, my stinky friend. I have worked with many Ameedicans engaged in clandestine activities here my beloved Afghanistan, including our flatulent and tumescent host. I have found that, almost without exception, Ameedicans are obsessed with what they regard as putrid smells and, indeed, seem to seek them out. Once even the slightest whiff is detected, they then engage in various histrionics and exaggerated efforts to rout them out. Many of the smells that Ameedicans regard as putrid or foul are regarded as natural and even delightful in third world countries. And, given your country's current economic morass, it seems inevitable that Ameedica is soon to join the growing ranks of third world nations. Welcome! I, therefore, would humbly submit for your consideration that you not only tolerate these olfactory aberrations, but learn to regard them, indeed, even to celebrate them, as simple expressions of the natural world, all of which were made by Allah, the Compassionate and Merciful.

Dear Moostasha, Thanks for your most profound and thoughtful response. I agree that we Ame-"reek"-ans seem to revel in things that are putrid, disgusting, and downright revolting (our current administration comes to mind). However, I believe it will be a long time before we "rank" as highly in the world as you clearly do in realizing a truly stinky culture (I'm thinking feta cheese here).

Hello, my profound friend. I am touched (in a very private way) by your gracious reply. As a token of my gratitude, please post your mailing address so that I can mail you a sample from our latest bountiful poppy harvest. This will also help you make peace with your malodorous dishwasher (and everything else) that disturbs you. We use it here with great success to cope with the ubiquitous odors of gunpowder, decomposing bodies, and yak manure.

Activa, please disregard my camel-humping friend. He really does mean well and, most of the time, his replies are marginally helpful. But sometimes, cultural differences make it difficult for him to relate effectively to the problems posted here. From the sounds of your problem description, your dishwasher may not be pumping out all the way between cycles. This is an easy visual check. Just open the door after the dishwasher finishes a pumpout and check the basin. Let us know whatcha find. Hello, Samurai, my grandiloquent friend. I would just like to point out that I have not "humped" a camel, as you say, since you were last here in Afghanistan during the invasion of the Soviet infidels. I seem to recall a younger and lustier Samurai who was quite smitten by a particular camel, so much so that you even named him Bessie. An odd name for a male camel, don't you think?

My dear friend, Moostafa: the poppy harvest must have indeed been bountiful this year because it seems to be affecting your memory. Sometime during one of your rare moments of lucidity, perhaps you'll be able to recall that Bessie was indeed a female camel. Now, I would appreciate it if you would refrain from defaming me further.

Good suggestion, CTG. Activa, here's the link to the Glisten that CTG recommended: http://www.repairclinic.com/referral.asp?R=154&N=821

That's great--but the shipping is almost as much as the product. maybe you could inflate the price of the product, and reduce the cost of shipping, so I don't feel so bad about ordering. Also, what's in the stuff? Is this the "nucular" option for dishwashers? Will this be armageddon for the friendly bacterial colonies currently residing peacefully in my septic tank?

Or, if it helps you feel any better, you could just go ahead and buy it then drop a Hamilton in the Beer Fund. I am most pleased to report that the malodorous dishwasher's putrescence has been mitigated substantially. It also doesn't stink so bad. The culprit was, indeed the detergent. So much for "green." Now, what to do about these acid burns on my hands...
