Master, The washer of my Kenmore Laundry center 417.94802301 began to offer the mating call of the Japanese horned swallow - a high pitched, pulsating squeal - while on the final rinse/spin cycle. An invisible smoke accompanied the noise, perceptible only by mine highly trained nostrils. Not quite an electrical smell- not quite rubber/belt. Upon opening the unit, I discovered that the top circular plastic ring of the outer tub had a large gash in the side of it. That would fit the smell! Further inspection revealed that the inner tub is significantly off center, allowing the inner and outer tubs to contact. I could find no signs of leaking oil or grease. Aside from the dust, the unit was clean, save the plastic shavings from the gash. There was some black soft substances in there too, but they seem much more like the eminations of my beloved mice than an industrial lubricant. Why is my unit out of balance? Does it need acupuncture to realign its energy flow? Also, in the process of dissasembly, I removed the dryer unit. My Geisha wishes to still be able to dry her clothes while I do the repairs. Can the drier safely be used alone, if properly supported and vented? Thine Humble Apprentice, Wallknight

Hello, my squealing friend. Check the tub attachments and the suspension springs. It is my fervent hope and prayer that this diagram is of assistance to you in this endeavor. And operating your dryer apart from the washer should be perfectly fine as long as it is properly vented as you stated.

Is there some sort of mechanism that is supposed to center the inner tub in the outer? After considerable tugging, I was able to center it somewhat, but I cant image how that should be like that. Is there something under the inner, above the other that would do that? I cant quite make sense of the diagram as to what is in there. Thanks for your help, though! One of the trunnion bolts has broken the head off, now the spin basket is loose and floppy on the transmission shaft, letting the basket contact and tear up the top splash guard, (not at all an uncommon problem on these junk "Frigidaire" built machines). Remove the agitator and you will see the two bolts, (will probably look like one bolt is missing because the head will be broken off), at the top of the trunnion and the lock bar that the two bolts go into to lock the trunnion onto the tranmission shaft. The smell was the plastic melting when the basket rubbed the splash guard, there is also a good chance the tub seal has been damaged. If it hasn't been used too long this way you might get lucky and not have to replace the tub seal, but it would be a good idea to replace it while you have it apart, (the tub seal on these machines are another of there weak points that are seen to fail quite often).

Hello Willie! Thanks for you help, but we arent quite there yet. Removing the agitator, the shaft was a little rusty, esp. near the top 'gear'. Both bolts were intact, including the heads. (I'm assuming the trunion is the clamping device that holds the shaft to the 'tubspinner'; #14-15 on the diagram.) Now, what I did find to be odd was, when unbolting the 5 bolts holding the inner tub in (#13), and removing an awefully heavy inner tub, that there seems to be some fluid in the upper chamber of the tub (seems to be the portion pointed to as #12). I dont know how it got there, but I'm guessing that is not right. It seems there might be enough to throw it out of balance, and would explain how I was able to change the offset with some pushing around - if the water moved to another portion of the chamber, thus shifting the imbalance to another part of the tub. So, 1)should there be any fluid still in the inner tub upper lid/chamber 2) how should it come out? if there is just a clogged hole, where? if no hole, can I drill a few? We do have hard water issues, so if there are small drain holes somewhere, a clog wouldnt surprise me. Thanks again to both of you.

if its any help, the gash is in the side of #3(upper outer tub cover), at the front-- would be the "cutout" section of the diagram, front center. Also, the upper edge of the inner tub only shows significant wear on one section, again telling me that there was fluid in only that one section. Now, what part is the tub seal? ok; if that's not the problem, I'm still stuck as to why its off center. There's no indication of a bearing failure; the trunion bolts are fine. Have I officially stumped the panel?

Ok, here's the latest. my frustration led to yanking and pushing and hitting, etc. As I did so, it revealed that one of the metal struts that holds the springs to the tubs--the welds had broken! Thankfully, its soft steel, so I was able to drill and bolt it back on. It seems to work, although it is still a bit off balance. Is that normal? or should these spin like a gyroscope when empty?

Should be fine, as long as you got it lined back up real close to the original spot when you bolted it back together so that you don't have the upper or lower bearings in a bind, I've seen this same type of failure and fixed it the same way you did. From your orginal description of your problem it sounded like just the inner spin basket was loose, not the complete wash assembly. If it still spins smooth, a little wobble should be ok. Just don't want the wash assembly banging against the cabinet walls.
