I replaced the broken tumbler belt and everything seemed ok except where the belt comes up from the idler pulley towards the drum (ie. heading towards one o'clock), it rubs against the part of the belt right on the motor pulley (as well as against the metal guide on the idler pulley). From the pictures I've seen, there should be at least an inch between the belt coming off the idler and where it's on the motor pulley. I tried to attach a photo of my dryer to this message, but the file was too big. Thanks.

The pictorials spacing is a little exaggerated on the bag and manual, but you should not be rubbing. You followed the picture on the bag I assume and it is an original part? Also, belt goes smooth side down against the drum surface, not groove side like the rest of the world does. Yes, new belt. smooth side down. I can feel the belt in the groove on the tumbler, and through the acces panel in the back can see the idler and motor pulleys. When I turn the tumbler with my hand, the belt does not stay on the idler very well. Also the metal guide seems further counterclockwise than in the photos, ie. closer to one o'clock than 2. Could the tumbler be misaligned? It doesn't seem so from the front. and turns ok by hand.

Make sure your belt is aligned on the drum correctly. You should see a mark where it had been for years. It shouldn't be in the recessed spot of the drum. As you rotate the drum in the correct direction, it should track and align itself.

Yes. Thanks. That was it! I realigned the belt out of the groove and it works (although I haven't tried drying any clothes yet, it is tumbling again). One more small question, and I don't know if it makes a lot of difference. I didn't pay close enough attention when I removed the small back access panel to get to the pulleys, so didn't recall which way the slats faced - inward/down, outward /down, inward/up, or outward/up. There are some slats cut into the larger back panel of the dryer and the ones on the lower half face out and down so I went with that. Thanks.
