Guru San, the outlet of our 14 yo Maytag is all rusty and is starting to leak. It leaks enough that in one cycle it soaks a rag I've wrapped around the attached line (see attached pic). It's not a gusher, but may portend an upcoming disaster if the rust lets go. Is this fixable with some sort of advanced Washer Tub Outlet Rustbuster or other similar compound? Or is another tactic recommended that I can't find anywhere as this device's model number LATS424AAE exists nowhere in either the Googlesphere or Fixitopolis. My eyesight isn't as good as it once was ( see RegUs_Patoff video), but from here, it looks like your model number plate reads LAT8424AAE I don't think I can help you, but is that tub connection to hose # 16 & 17 in this diagram ? Most Honorable RegUS_PatOff -San; Man o man, I had triple checked that model number before posting, so I'm highy embarassed. It is indeed LAT8424AAE, not LAT"S"... Ergo my inability to find any references to that model existing. Mea culpa! You are again correct that that is the junction of hose 16 & clamp 17 to the tub as shown on the diagram. Any recommended sealers or other procedures to stave off failure of that outlet area? thanks!

I would be hesitant about any glue or bonding material and I am sure others would as well because of the potential damage it could cause if it lets go. I did repair a similar unit once in a friends Car Wash with JB Weld on the exact seam and it held fine for years (still might be for all I know). But in a living space (his was concrete slab in a Garage setting) I would never do it as a Service Tech. Last touched your fault scenario. http://jbweld.net/index.php

So it appears that a replacement tub would be in order. Dang. If a tub is swapped out, do any specific seals/bearings also need replacing at the same time?

Part numbers 29 & 23 would be recommended to be replaced. If the old ones were fine, you wouldn't need them, but most of us would recommend changing them because you are in there. You might want to check some local dealers or used appliance places, they might have a tub for you. The Dependable care lines with the plastic tub cover such as yours only had two tubs, a deep, and a shallow. Measuring from the base up will tell you your size tub. You will need a spanner wrench to remove the hub and spanner nut.

Sudsy Sensei San: A follow up. The rusty joint settled in and held tight for another two years. Regular inspections kept my blood pressure in check. I was not able to find any used tubs in my area  Finally this past summer it started another slow leak which started getting a little worse with each use. I retired the old workhorse and got me a new Maytag. Heck, if I got 16 years out of this one I'll gamble with the same make. Thanks for helping me get through the jam. I shall paypal some malt credits your way.

Maytag's financial meltdown had nothing to do with quality being too good. Rather, it was the *opposite*---an erosion of quality---over time. Maytag corporate effectively "ran the company into the ground". And it's often said that Yale / Harvard business elites are "Captains of Industry". I sometimes seriously wonder about that.
