My mother-in-law's 3-4 year old Amana refrigerator seems to be functioning properly but every 3 to 5 minutes there is a buzzing and switch sound coming from the lower part of the unit; it is as if something is trying to turn on and doesn't.  She said it has been happening for the last two weeks.  There is no build up of frost or moisture in either the food or freezer compartments.   The sealed components are still under warranty but not sure this issue would be covered and I want to find the problem before it gets worse.

Gonna have to try and locate the noise a little better. is it coming from inside the freezer or under or behind the unit itself. You description sounds like the compressor trying to turn on but if it's cooing fine then thats not your problem. Just gonna have to put the eyes and ears to work.

The sound seemed to be coming from the lower parts of the inside.  And it did sound like something trying to start and giving up.  Definitely not from inside the freezer.  She also doesn't have an ice maker.  I can't really locate the sound any better without taking it apart.

It seems the unit isn't cooling like it should after all.  However it is quite warm and humid today after a cold spring.  But the ice is thawing and the frozen vegetables are no longer frozen.  The fans are working and it seems like cold air is coming out though.  I've gone home and mother-in-law has put stuff in iced filled coolers.  She'll probably call a repairman.

Sounds like a bad Compressor (part of sealed system), or just a bad Relay/Overload device that plugs into the Compressor.

Thanks.  Hopefully it is still under warranty as the inside label is dated 2002.  Mom is looking for her receipt.
